Love
Gauguin's Flowers
Sara took off her glasses and rubbed her eyes, tired from the light of halogen lamps. In her short-sighted world, the butcher’s shop merged into a liquid shadow with the pharmacy next door. She put the glasses back on in time to see the dust at the passage of a truck, strangled in the narrow and dark street. Together, a strong smell of gunpowder irritated her nostrils.

Winter Storm
Diana falls into the heavy door of her dilapidated cabin. She kicks the ice off the edges and shoves her whole body into the door, this time on purpose, to get it open. Her eyes were blurred from the blinding white of the snow, and the swelling from the blows she took to the face just minutes earlier. She felt a pain in her leg and figured she should probably patch that up before taking off to a new town.

Dragon Love
There weren’t always Dragons in The Valley. It was shortly after the summer solstice when the first one arrived, cruising through the sleepy little mountain town on his loud rumbling motorcycle, the obnoxious intruder disturbing the slow peacefulness of the place as he rode up to the Park and Sleep motel at the edge of town.

Forty Years Young
The morning I woke up, forty years old, I sat in my bed. Slowly, I looked around the room. The small room, square in shape and surrounded by four walls with just enough space for a full-sized bed and my 22-inch screen TV mounted just above my dresser, was a perfect indication of who I was. I sat, deep in thought, for what seemed like several minutes…hours even…with the time flashing as quickly as my forty years of life.

Coming Clean
Dear Momma, There has been a secret that I have been keeping from you. Something that has been weighing on me for some time. About 2 years ago I was sucked through a portal. That portal led to a world filled with magic, dragons, elves, and many other kinds of creatures and people. This world had humans like ours but their technology was hundreds of years behind ours. However, with the help of their magic, they can accomplish the same things we can. While there, I met many different kinds of people. Such as people that were half human and half animal (beast people), elves, dragons, dwarfs, and even fairies, small creatures who guarded the Great Forest.

The Cries Of Their Souls
There weren’t always dragons in the Valley. Not real ones anyway and certainly not above ground. Their granny seemed to know everything and she knew that her husband hadn’t been slain in the usual way. She was the only one still alive that remembered their life before.

Serendipity
There weren’t always dragons in the valley. In fact, she could vividly remember a time when there were not dragons in the valley. She remembered running through the bright, colorful valley, full of wildflowers. She could still smell the flowers, the breeze blowing them through the air and taking her breath away. She could still feel the way her curly hair bounced off her neck as she ran. She could feel herself twirling, her dress swirling around her legs, hitting flower after flower, until she fell to the ground, laughing. Through it all, he would just watch her, following slowly to make sure she was safe. As she lay in the tall grass and wildflowers, he would slowly come into view. His luscious dirty blonde hair, followed by his light blue eyes, his neck, then his manly shoulders and the arms that wrapped around her so tightly and perfectly. The look on his face, always one of sincere amusement and happiness while he watched her antics. Only someone who truly loves you can find pure joy in your joy. At least, she thought so, at the time. Now she had no idea what she believed. All her life she spent hoping for true love, a real honest partner. She believed with every fiber of her being that he was it. Perhaps everyone had been right when they told her love wasn’t the way she thought of it. It wasn’t sparks and romance and excitement. It was calm, predictable and safe. What if she just wanted all those things combined? What if she believed she had it all, only for it to fall away from her and prove everyone else right? What if the dragons coming and taking over their valley, was a sign that the life she dreamed of was just that… a dream?
