The Old Man of the Celestial Court
There weren't always dragons in the Valley. But little Susie needed a new toy, so, as it was written in the opening words of one of the many holy books the humans had come up with in order to explain the batshit place they lived in, “It had to happen.” There weren’t always unicorns, either; it had to happen. There weren’t always manticores, jellyfish, dogs, rats, lions, cows, scorpions, whales, snails, or anything else in the Valley, really. All of it had come from the insistence of little Susie. Humanity itself had at one time been the answer to one of Susie’s demands to her father, the god of creation: “I want a creature that looks like a god but thinks like a baby all the days of its life.”

The God of the Valley
There weren’t always dragons in the Valley. For a time, there was only war. Ruo Zhi huddled closer to his mother, fingers curling into a tight fist in her robes. When he was a mere babe in his home village, he could not differentiate what was peace, and what was chaos. All he knew was this: he was hungry, he was thirsty, he was tired, or he was all three.

Dragon Blaze
“There weren’t always dragons in the valley.” The statement had often been whispered by the elders to eager children behind closed doors, trailing from house to house like a gust of hope in our dark and barren land. The words echoed in the long-quiet cavernous ears of those who had long forgotten to dream, the ears of those who no longer found purpose in eyes alight with fantasy when they had children to keep out of the ground.

New Fantasy Fiction Challenge Prologue
There weren't always dragons in the valley. The mystics say the dragons came because we stopped offerings and sacrifices to our gods. The warriors say the dragons came because we let down our defenses and stopped honoring the fallen dead. Some scholars say the dragons are the result of disharmony among the clans of the north. The only thing that matters is that the dragons have returned.

The Wormholes of IO
There weren't always dragons in the valley, the sea wasn't full of Kaiju, and the mountains belonged to the goats before the Giants showed up. The world that would come to be known as IO was just an untamed wild forest planet, similar to terrain found on earth, full of perfectly normal animals that lead ordinary everyday lives. Sure the trees were always pan-dimensional beings that would whisper hints about the future, but are you sure that earth trees don't have that in common.

Dragons in the Valley
There weren't always dragons in the Valley. The elves had to make a drastic decision to save them before they were all hunted down. Outside the Valley, the dragons had been ruling the skies for 1000s of years. The dragons were beautiful and majestic as they flew over the lands. They had a variety of colors, shapes, and wingspans. Most were a golden brown or burnt yellow. Occasionally, you would see a red or even a blue dragon but the rarest of them all was the black dragon. Dragons weren't massive creatures either. They averaged about 25 feet in length, including tail, with a wingspan of 50 feet. Though they are playful and harmless, they are not to be trifled with when you mess with someone they love.
