Valley of Bones
There weren’t always dragons in the Valley. In fact, if I’m going to be perfectly honest, there still aren’t. I just have always thought that would be an epic first line to an epic fantasy; There weren’t always dragons in the Valley. Notice that “Valley” is capitalized. That’s because, around here, there’s really only one. This is it. The one valley. The Valley.

Dragon Dance
There weren’t always dragons in the valley. A cold shiver ran down Kota’s spine, despite the warm sun shining. There’s no such thing as dragons, she reassured herself. She could see clouds forming in the distance and could smell rain on the air. Sunshine and rain at the same time means the dragons are having their dances. She shrugged her pack higher on her shoulders, said aloud, “Paper Drama,” for reassurance and kept walking.

Double Dragoons
"People who do not believe in the existence of dragons are often eaten by dragons." ~ Ursula K. Le Guin There weren't always dragons in the Valley of Ataúd. At least not until the ancient Dräägz—Bel-Katran & Dorn-Atrax—were stirred from their primeval slumber by archaeologists digging beneath the rocky surface of Draco Primus. On separate continents, the human twins Ereboz & Eroz each found a diadem that turned out to be Royal Gemstones belonging to Bel-Katran & Dorn-Atrax (respectively). As a result, both brothers were transformed into 'Dragoons'; whom blindly executed the will of those powerful dragon lords.

The Book of Juno
There weren't always dragons in the Valley. My father’s book whispers of a time before winged shadows passed over the land. Beneath my hand, each page turns from one hushed tale to the next. Legends unfurl and letters march in perfect rows abreast of forgotten narratives. These words were penned before the mountains had yet felt the imprint of a soldier’s boot or echoed the beat of war drums. From when the only marks of age upon the mountains’ faces were carved by unwitnessed storms and the hooves of rams; not worried by the scourge of divine judgment.

The Keepers of the Light
There weren’t always dragons in the valley. King Cassian’s peaceful reign had guaranteed it. The land flourished, the people thrived and no darkness invaded the Tiralyne valley. Even the surrounding lands benefited from the king’s kind reign and even the forest folk & plains people had found peace with the valley kingdom after years of tension.

Valtus
There weren't always dragons in the valley. It took us damn near a century to get our home back from men. Now here I was, perched on a mountaintop, overlooking beautiful Glass Valley while my family flew about, just below the clouds. I was finally at peace. The setting sun shone off the great lake in the middle of the valley. The lack of wind gave the lake a glass shine, which attributed to the gorgeous piece of land its' name. It was the most desirable region in all of the kingdom of Valtus, both for us and for the humans.

Valley of Dragons. Runner-Up in The Fantasy Prologue.
“There weren’t always dragons in the Valley.” Two pairs of eyes stared at me in rapturous attention. The one young, luminous honey-brown and wondrous, the other golden and ageless, the hint of a smile dancing deep within.
