Sweet Golden Summer Sun
I grew up in Eastern Pennsylvania in the 80's in a town called Emmaus. This meant that summer included hot and humid days in an area that had suburbs and small towns surrounded by lots of small farms which had been in families since the arrival of their German ancestors in the 1700's.

Salty Sweet Summer Treat
Ah summer... There is so much about the season that tantalizes the senses. You have the smell of freshly cut grass on Saturday mornings, then there's the reverberating sounds of fireworks during mid-summer celebrations, and who can forget the feel of the warm glow of the sun on your skin or the dazzling visual that it paints as it sets during those long summer days. There is no doubt that summer is a season to behold for the senses, but what about taste? Every season has its food staples but summer seems to have a unique way of making food abundantly more satisfying. Perhaps it's the pool parties where you're completely waterlogged when you sit down to eat and it just hits the right spot, or maybe the refreshing watermelon eaten at a picnic on a hot day with your older siblings teasing you that one will grow in your belly if you swallow the seeds. Whatever the food, it is sure to evoke a vivid memory when certain flavors hit your taste buds.

My Mom's 90s Era Pasta Salad and My Newman's Own Dressing Obsession. Runner-Up in Summer Camp Challenge. Top Story - June 2022.
Ever since I was old enough to eat salads, I have been obsessed with Newman’s Own oil and vinegar salad dressing. As a child of the 90s, my mom often served dinner side salads, and my iceberg lettuce and carrot shreds would be doused with the best that Paul Newman had to offer. My salad bowl would resemble an oil and vinegar soup because I’d use half the bottle in one sitting. By the time I reached elementary school, my mom had to start buying the dressing in bulk due to the sheer quantity I was consuming.

I have many associations with food and summer, not all of them good. Where would Britain be without the hope of a barbecue? Summers in Britain are notoriously short-lived, if they appear at all so the chance of eating outdoors or having a picnic somewhere was a real treat, especially if grey cloud cover and a torrent of rain didn't spoil it completely. Although the elements would always be looking to thwart any plans for al fresco dining, sometimes there was the chance of burgers in buns, a hot dog made out of the finest butchers' sausages as opposed to wiener dogs and coleslaw and potato salad, possibly under a sunny sky but more than likely not.
