Sippin Sunshine
The thickness of the air foreshadows a sticky hot girl summer on this humid Sunday in Ohio. Ominous gray clouds tease umbrella-less pedestrians as they scurry from store to store. Some people even preemptively ducking under awnings anticipating the start of the rain show. Having lived in Columbus for the past 12 years and Ohio practically my whole life, you begin to gain your own appreciation for the rain. Especially in the summertime. Like the smell of morning dew on freshly cut grass, the rain often carries a distinct scent of renewal. A gentle reminder to take pause, reflect and be present.

Summer Blues
If there was ever a time during which I was not beholden to an almost fanatical love of blueberries, that time lies outside the reaches of my memory. As a child, this phenomenal adoration was a thing of pure instinct — good taste equals good — and, funnily enough, my son seems to have inherited it. Little do we know, in our youth, of the history, the majesty and the power of the blueberry. But the more I learn, the more it all makes sense. From my humbled, primitive and singular point of view within the vastness of the universe, these minuscule, innocuous fruits are the ultimate food, Summer or no.

Cold Cucumbers beat the Summer Heat
Growing up, I always loved a summer side dish I thought my mother had created. She would slice up cold cucumbers into a large bowl, adding sour cream and salt. I loved mine served with extra salt and the moisture of the cucumbers made the sour cream a thin dressing. Cold, crisp, crunchy, and refreshing on a hot summer afternoon. It was one of her sides she would make in large bowls, along with her potato salad and macaroni salad, to bring to family reunions, barbecues, and parties.

Don't Worry With Strawberries!
Growing up, I remember going to the strawberry patch during the summer months. My brother and I had the responsibility of preparing and washing the strawberries. Some summers, we had to wash and clean the summer fruit in the bathtub because we picked so many!

Summer's Three-Course Meal
I’ve always seen summer as a months-long feast that matured with the season. The first taste of summer was always a crisp, sun-warmed green bean. My mom’s garden held the bulk of our plants, but a green bean patch under a window was all my own. Summer after summer, the green beans would produce first. I learned planning, patience, consistency, and eventually basic math in that 1-foot by 3-foot plot. I’m not a fan of green bean casserole or steamed green beans, but the earthy texture and satisfying snap of a fresh green bean always takes me back to the first few days of summer. When I need a quick infusion of hope and promise, I put a bag of fresh green beans in my cart. With every bite, I bask in the feeling that this is the beginning of brighter carefree days ahead.
