Sweden

Kladdkaka is a delectable chocolate cake prepared with eggs, cocoa or chocolate, butter, sugar, and flour. It forms in a dense batter and when baked the center should be moist and the outer layer, a thin crunchy coating. The top of the cake is dusted with powdered sugar.

Scotland

Millionaire’s shortbread is a dessert that combines a crumbly shortcake base with a soft caramel middle, and a crisp chocolate top.

France

Profiteroles are chocolate-covered puff pastries. They’re filled with whipped cream, custard pastry cream or vanilla ice cream.

Royal is a classic dessert. The base of the cake is dacquoise, an almond meringue topped with crunchy praline cream consisting of melted chocolate, thin and crispy crepe dentelle biscuits, and praline paste.

Netherlands

Arretje nof is a traditional cake. This chocolate cake needs no baking. It is prepared with butter, cookies, dark chocolate, sugar, eggs, and cocoa powder. The ingredients are melted into a sauce, mixed with cookie pieces, and then the mixture is poured into a cake pan, flattened, and left in the fridge for a few hours or overnight. Once chilled and solid the cake is cut into slices.

Austria

Sacher Torte is a popular Austrian cake. It consists of layered chocolate sponge cake thinly coated with apricot jam and topped with chocolate icing.

Belgium

Torta Garash is a popular dessert consisting of five walnut sponges layered with dark chocolate. The whole cake is covered with glistening chocolate icing or creamy ganache.

Germany

Schwartzwalder Kirschtorte/Black Forest cherry cake consists of chocolate sponge layers coated in whipped cream and dotted with kirschwasser-infused cherries. Versions use Kirschwasser brandy to soak the chocolate layers.

Hungary

Zserbo is a layered chocolate-topped apricot and walnut cake. Other fillings can include ginger, apples, plum jam, honey, and walnuts.

Poland

Wuzetka is a traditional cake originating in Warsaw. The cake consists of chocolate sponge cake filled with whipped cream and covered with chocolate icing. The cake is made with flour, eggs, sugar, butter, cocoa powder, rum, and plum jam, The icing consists of butter, milk, and dark chocolate and is poured over the cake.

Croatia

Madarica is a traditional layer cake coated with a velvety chocolate-infused cream and covered with a dark chocolate glaze.

Serbia

Reform torta is a multi-layered cake. It combines walnut sponge cake with a creamy chocolate filling. The sponge consists of egg whites, sugar, and walnuts and the filling combines chocolate, egg yolks, sugar, and butter.

Romania

Amandine is a traditional chocolate cake filled with chocolate or almond cream. The cake has four components – sponge cake, syrup, filling, and glaze. The sponge is a mix of eggs, sugar, water, flour, oil, and cocoa. Chocolate buttercream filling prepared with eggs, sugar, butter, vanilla, and cocoa. The glaze is made with chocolate and whipping cream.

Italy

Torta Caprese is a dark chocolate cake prepared without any flour. It combines dark chocolate, eggs, sugar, almonds, and butter.

Baci di Alassio are chocolate hazelnut cookies originating in the Ligurian town of Alassio. The cookies are called baci meaning kisses. They consist of two small hazelnut cookies with a rich chocolate ganache between them so the cookies look similar to lips sending a kiss.

South America

Brazil

Bolo de brigadeiro is a traditional cake that consists of three layers of moist chocolate cake with a fudgy brigadeiro filling. The frosting is made with condensed milk, table cream, margarine, chocolate powder, full-fat milk, and cornstarch. The base layer consists of sugar, butter, oil, eggs, vanilla, flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and whole milk.

Argentina

Chocotorta is a no-bake Argentinian dessert. It consists of three Argentinian staple ingredients –chocolate biscuits, dulce de leche, and cream cheese. The cookies are softened in milk and layered with cream cheese and dulce de leche.
