Morbradboffer I flodesovs is a classic casserole that is made with pork tenderloin, and a lot of onions, and covered with a creamy sauce. It is baked as a casserole and complemented with mushrooms or crispy bacon bits.

Lithuania
Kugelis is a Lithuanian national dish. It is prepared with potatoes, onions, milk, bacon and eggs. The ingredients are layered in a baking dish and baked until golden. It is served with chopped scallions and sour cream.

England
Shepard’s Pie is a classic comfort food. This casserole is prepared with minced lamb or mutton meat, onions, carrots, Worcestershire sauce, thick gravy, and seasonings like marjoram, parsley, and black pepper. They are placed into a casserole dish, topped with mashed potatoes, and baked until the top is golden brown.

France
Tartiflette originated in the mountainous region of Savoie. It consists of medium-sized potatoes, white wine, Reblochon cheese, onions, smoked salt pork, and crème fraiche. The dish is baked in the oven until the cheese browns and melts.

Gratin Dauphinois is a savory casserole that is made with thinly sliced potatoes, crème fraiche, and butter layered and baked in a shallow earthenware cooking dish.

Hungary
Rakott krumpli is a traditional casserole. It is prepared with multiple layers of sliced potatoes, fried bacon, csabai sausage, and a creamy mixture of eggs and sour cream. The casserole is baked until golden brown and crispy.

Bulgaria
Banska kampma is a casserole that originated in the Bansko and Razlog regions. It is made with sauerkraut and different meats like chicken, veal, pork, and rabbit. Sausages and rice can be added. It is flavored with pepper, bay leaves, and paprika, layered in a clay pot, sealed with dough, and baked for four hours at low temperature.

Romania
Varza a la Cluj is a specialty of Transylvania. The casserole consists of sour cabbage, minced meat, and rice. The sour cabbage is cooked and then combined with seasoned minced meat, onion, and rice and placed in a baking dish. It is topped with a mix of sour cream and milk and can be flavored with tomato sauce or sour cream between the layers.

Greece
Giouvetsi is a casserole that was named after Turkish earthenware. This classic casserole is a mix of pasta and tomato braised meat that is prepared in a one-pot oven dish. The choice of meat is usually veal with a rich tomato sauce seasoned with cinnamon, allspice, red wine, cloves, and bay leaves. The pasta used is small-sized orzo or square-shaped hilopites. The casserole is layered and topped with grated cheese.

Pasticcio is the Greek version of Italian lasagna. Layers of ground lamb are layered with tubular pasta and tomato sauce, and finally topped with bechamel sauce and sprinkled with kefalotyn or kasseri cheese.

Italy
Parmigiana alla napoletana is a popular casserole made with eggplant. It originated in the Campania region. The casserole is prepared with eggplants, olive oil, onions, basil, tomatoes, mozzarella, or fior di latte cheese and grated Parmigiano-Reggiano. The eggplants are peeled, sliced, and fried. After they’re arranged in a baking dish over tomato sauce with cheese, basil leaves, and grated Parmigiano-Reggiano. The layers are repeated to the top and end in tomato sauce and grated cheese.

Lasagna alla parmigiana is a traditional kind of lasagna that originated in the Emilia-Romagna region. This casserole is a combination of two Italian classics – lasagna pasta and eggplant parmigiana. Lasagna sheets are layered with eggplants, tomatoes, garlic, mozzarella, olive oil, basil, grated cheese, salt, and black pepper. Eggplants are peeled, sliced, salted, drained, and fried until golden. The tomato sauce consists of tomatoes, olive oil, and garlic.

Timballo is an authentic Italian dish. It is baked layered with sheets of pasta, sausage, additional pasta, meat sauce, bechamel sauce, different vegetables, cheese, and one last layer of pasta. It is a pie-like dish baked in the oven.

Spain
Fideus a la cassola is a Catalan dish. It is made with noodles, pork chops, sausage, olive oil, tomatoes, onions, garlic, and parsley baked in a clay pot. The noodles are added to the pot after all the other ingredients have begun to caramelize and release juices.

North America

Baked ziti is a casserole that is made with ziti, a tubular pasta and baked with chunky sauces, cheese, ground meat, and vegetables like mushrooms, peppers, and onions. The ingredients are layered in a casserole dish and baked.

Hotdish is a Midwestern classic. The casserole consists of ground beef, vegetables, mixed with canned soup like cream of mushroom soup, and topped with tater tots, and baked until bubbly and golden.

Brazil
Escondidinho is a traditional Brazilian casserole. It consists of a variety of beef, chicken, fish, pork, or shrimp. The original version is known as escondidinho de came seca and is a combination of dried and salted meat and mashed potatoes. This casserole is baked with tomatoes, onions, garlic, and spices. All the ingredients are placed in a baking dish and topped with mashed potatoes and grated cheese.

Chile
Patel de choclo is a favorite home-cooked meal. It is a combination of ground beef, chicken, black olives, onions, hard-boiled eggs, and dough that is made from fresh ground corn (choclo).
