France

Croque-Monsieur is a classic French hot sandwich prepared with thin slices of ham and melted cheese between two pieces of sliced bread.

Germany

Strammer Max is an open-faced sandwich served warm. It is made with a slice of rye or wheat flour bread which can be toasted and buttered or fried in butter or oil. The bread is seasoned with salt, pepper, and at times mustard. It is topped with cured hame and a fried egg.

Italy

Panino col polpo is a traditional sandwich originating in the Bari area. The sandwich is made with bread rolls, octopus, olive oil, parsley, salt, and black pepper. the octopus is brushed with olive oil and grilled. It is placed on a split bread roll and the sauce from cooking drizzled on top.

Spain

Bocadillo de jamon is prepared with Spanish breat and slices of Spanish ham like jamon Serrano. a baguette is cut in half and drizzled with olive oil and rubbed with tomato halves and garlic. Then filled with ham, slices of cheese, tomatoes, strips of piquillo peppers, and pitted black olives.

Bocadillo de cerdo is prepared by cutting a baguette in half. It can be filled with pork in various forms like pork loin chops, roasted pork, lomo de cerdo (pork tenderloin), pork fillets, pulled pork, or pork ribs. Other ingredients include fried onions, slices of crispy-fried bacon, tortilla, goat cheese, cabbage, pickles, butter, roasted red peppers, and a variety of sauces.

Portugal

Prego sandwich is made with thin slices of beef seasoned with garlic, fried and sauteed with onions and wine. Then added to a bread roll. It can be accompanied by mustard and hot sauce and is sometimes topped with a fried egg.

Israel

Sabich is made with pita bread stuffed with fried eggplants, hard-boiled eggs, tahini sauce, Israeli salad, hummus, pickled mango sauce, and parsley.

Lebanon

Shwarma is delicious marinated meat cooked on a rotating skewer. The meat can be lamb, beef, chicken, turkey, or a mix. Once done the delicious meat is filled in tortilla bread.

Vietnam

Banh mi thit is a traditional sandwich. It is made with cold cuts like sliced roasted pork, sliced pork belly, chả (sliced ham), or chả lụa pork sausage, along with cucumbers, mayonnaise, pickled carrots and daikon, and liver pâté stuffed into a bánh mì roll. The sandwich is often garnished with ingredients such as coriander, black pepper, and sliced chili peppers.

Egypt

Kebda Eskandarani or Alexandrian liver is a delicious sandwich. It is made with fried beef liver with spicy seasonings such as cumin, garlic, cardamom, and chili peppers. Usually served in sandwiches along with tahini dip, or on its own, accompanied by warm rice, lime wedges, or pita bread on the side.

Tunisia

Fricassee is a traditional sandwich. The base is made with flour, eggs, oil, salt, water, and yeast, and shaped into round or elongated rolls which are fried in hot oil and filled with tuna, hummus, boiled eggs, capers, olives, harissa, and boiled potatoes.

California

Monte Cristo is a sandwich made with two slices of white bread that are filled with cheese, ham, turkey, or chicken. The combination is dipped in beaten eggs and fried in butter.

Florida

Cuban sandwich is a grilled pressed sandwich made with Cuban bread. The bread is filled with ham, roasted pork, Swiss cheese, pickles, and mustard.

Chicago

Italian beef is a sandwich that consists of thinly, sliced, seasoned layers of beef on an Italian roll. Topped with either pickled giardiniera relish or roasted green bell peppers. The sandwich is typically dipped in jus - on one end, both ends, or completely soaked in the flavorful gravy. Mozzarella or cheddar cheese can be added.

Po'Boy is a sandwich that is made with French bread filled with a variety of meat or seafood like roast beef, ham and cheese, meatballs, oysters, crabs, or shrimps.

Muffuletta is a traditional sandwich prepared with a split loaf of bread filled with olive salad, salami, ham, mortadella, and cheeses such as mozzarella and provolone. The olive salad is often made with a mixture of olives, capers, shallots, peperoncini peppers, and giardiniera - an Italian relish of pickled vegetables.

Maine

Lobster rolls are a specialty in Maine. Cooked lobster meat is drizzled with melted butter and place on long hot dog rolls. It might include olive salad, salami, ham, mortadella, and cheeses such as mozzarella and provolone. The olive salad is often made with a mixture of olives, capers, shallots, peperoncini peppers, and giardiniera - an Italian relish of pickled vegetables.

Nebraska

Runza is a specialty of the state. A yeast dough bread is filled with beef, cabbage, onions, and various seasonings. It can be baked in many shapes such as squares, triangles, or half-moons, although the authentic Nebraskan version is almost always baked in a rectangular shape.

New England

Steak bomb is a moist sandwich that is made with a bread roll filled with steak, cheese, peppers, onions, mushrooms, and salami or sausages.

Grinder is a form of submarine sandwich popular in New England. A long roll is sliced halfway and filled with olive oil, sliced ham, turkey, salami, or prosciutto, provolone cheese, tomatoes, and shredded lettuce. It is sometimes dressed with vinegar, oregano, salt, and pepper.

New York

Rueben sandwich is well-known in NYC. Slices of rye bread are filled with corned beef, sauerkratut, Russian dressing, and Swiss cheese.

Another NYC staple is the pastrami on rye. It is the signature sandwich of the city. Rye bread slices are filled with pastrami and topped with spicy mustard, and typically accompanied by kosher dill pickles on the side.

Saratoga Springs

The Club sandwich comes from Saratoga Springs, N.Y. It is a sandwich where slices of toasted bread with mayonnaise are filled with bacon, cooked chicken breast, tomatoes, and lettuce.

Philadelphia

Philly Cheesesteak is an icon of the city. A long hoagie roll is filled with thinly sliced pieces of steak and tender, melting cheese.

Tennessee

Nashville

The hot chicken sandwich is the signature dish of Nashville. Crispy fried, marinated chicken pieces served on a toasted white bun. The meat is covered in a cayenne pepper-based hot sauce that penetrates the crispy coating. In addition of pickles, shredded lettuce, mayonnaise or a sour cream dressing enriched with various herbs can be added.

Texas

Texas brisket sandwich is made with smoking brisket. The brisket is sliced and added to slices of bread or placed on a toasted bun. It is served on its own or drenched in sauce, and garnished with toppings such as cheese, pickles, and onions

Mexico

Tortas are traditional sandwiches. There are two bread varieties usually incorporated in tortas, the traditional French influenced bolillos, and the similar round teleras, which are an authentic Mexican product from Puebla. The rolls are sliced in half and buttered. Then filled with beans, avocados, ham, queso, jalapeños, and a myriad of other typical Mexican dishes like fried beef or chicken, shredded beef, roasted pork, and even tamales.

Pambazo is the name of both a Mexican bread and a sandwich using this bread. The bread is commonly dipped in a spicy, pepper-onion-garlic sauce called guajillo, giving the sandwich a unique, bright orange color. It is filled with ingredients such as potatoes, refried beans, avocado slices, chicken, and chorizo sausage.

South America

Peru

Butifarra is a sandwich that is made with crusty white bread filled with jamón del país (garlic-infused peppery ham), salsa criolla, lettuce, and aji peppers.

Pan con relleno is a sandwich where the key ingredient is Peruvian blood sausage. To make the sandwich yellow chili peppers are sautéed in oil with the pork relleno, mint, and sugar. The combination is seasoned with salt and pepper, then cooked on low heat. Sweet potatoes are sautéed in a separate pan in oil until very crisp. Finally, the sweet potato slices and the relleno mixture are tucked into a split bread roll and the sandwich is ready to be enjoyed.

Argentina

Sandwich de Lomo is a steak sandwich filled with thinly sliced lomo steak, tomatoes, onions, lettuce, mayonnaise, chimichurri sauce, ham, cheese, and a fried egg.

Sanguche de milanese is a popular sandwich. It is made with a split baguette or long bread roll filled with milanesa, mayonnaise, tomatoes, onions, and shredded lettuce. Additional ingredients might include mustard, chimichurri, ham, or cheese.

Brazil

Bauru is a sandwich prepared with a crusty bread roll without the soft bread inside, stuffed with melted cheese, tomatoes, sliced pickles, and roast beef.

Chile

Churrasco Italiano is a sandwich prepared with fresh bread roll filled with thin slices of grilled steak, mayonnaise, tomatoes, and palta – a local name for avocados.

Venezuela

Arepa reina pepiada is one of the most famous arepa varieties in Venezuela. This type of arepa is stacked and filled with a combination of avocado, shredded chicken pieces, lime, coriander, mayonnaise, and optional peas.

Uruguay

Chivito is a sandwich made with ciabatta rolls filed with slices of churrasco (grilled/roasted and thinly sliced beef), ham, bacon, tomatoes, lettuce, melted mozzarella, and a topping of fried (or sometimes boiled) eggs.
