Europe

Denmark

Flaeskestegssandwich consists of a bun filled with thinly sliced flaeskesteg, a traditional pork roast with a crispy rind. Added to that are braised red cabbage, pickles, mustard, ketchup, or mayonnaise.

England

Bacon butty is a very popular sandwich. It consists of white bread slices or a bread roll. The bread is spread with butter and stuffed with a lot of bacon. You can add ketchup, brown sauce or an egg to the sandwich.

France

Jambon-beurre is a ham and butter sandwich. It is made with a baguette.

The Welch or Welsh complet is the French version of the Welsh rarebit. The sandwich is made by boiling beer in a pot, adding cheese (usually cheddar) to the pot and once melted, poured over a toasted slice of bread and ham. The sandwich is cooked until it gets golden and then a fried egg is placed on top.

Pan-bagnat is a sandwich that originated in Nice. The sandwich is made with a round bun filled with Nicoise salad. Once combined the sandwich is placed in the fridge for the flavors to soak into the bread.

Belgium

Mitraillette is a sandwich that originated in either Brussels or Wallonia. The sandwich is made with a long baguette filled with French fries, fried meat, and sauce. The meat can vary from meatballs to steaks to hamburgers and the sauce can be mayonnaise, bernaise, ketchup, or garlic. You can add cabbage, caramelized onions, lettuce, and tomatoes to the sandwich.

Germany

Leberkassemmel is a classic Bavarian and Austrian sandwich. The sandwich is made with a thick slice of leberkase which is a product that consists of ground meat baked into a meatloaf. Condiments include mustard and pickles.

Strammer Max is an open-faced sandwich that is served warm. The sandwich consists of a slice of rye or wheat flour bread toasted and buttered or fried in butter or oil. The bread is seasoned with salt, pepper, and mustard. It is topped with cured ham and a fried egg.

Fischbrotchen is a sandwich popular in Northern Germany. It consists of fish, pickles, remoulade, onions, lettuce, or horseradish. The ingredients are placed in round or elongated bread buns. The fish used are usually herring, sprats, salmon, or mackerel.

Czech Republic

Chlebicky are small, open-faced sandwiches. These consist of thin slices of white bread topple with spreads like potato salad, cream cheese, and lobster paste. Toppings like tomatoes, salmon, capers, Brie cheese, cooked ham or pepperoni.

Italy

Bocadillo serranito is a sandwich originating from Seville. It is made with an oblong crusty bread roll or white bread roll. The roll is filled with sliced fried pork tenderloin and Serrano ham, strips of fried green peppers, and tomato slices.

Tramezzino is a popular triangular sandwich. Crustless white bread is filled with mayonnaise, tuna, prosciutto, and cheese.

Mozzarella in carrozza is an Italian fried sandwich particularly popular in Campania. The sandwich is made with crustless, slightly stale bread, mozzarella cheese, flour, milk, and beaten eggs. Some versions add anchovies. Once assembled the sandwiches are dipped in flour and cold water, then beaten eggs and fried until brown and crisp.

Spain

Bocadillo de carne can be prepared with a variety of breads like Spanish-style baguette (barra de pan), hamburger buns, hot dog buns, viena andaluza, and mollete bread. The filling can include chicken, pork, beef, veal, goat, horse meat, and a variety of Spanish salamis or sausages.

Bocadillo de salmon sandwich is filled with pieces of smoked salmon layered on a Spanish-style baguette. The bread can be toasted and drizzled with olive oil. Other ingredients can include tomato slices, pickles, and tartar sauce.

Portugal

Sanduiche de pernil is a sandwich consisting of shredded pieces of slowly roasted pork shoulder on a crusty bread roll.

Bifana is a classic sandwich that is made with a seasoned, lightly pounded, sliced, or whole port steak simmered in a garlicky sauce. They're placed on a bread roll.

Prego is a sandwich made with thin slices of beef seasoned with garlic, fried, sauteed, onions, and wine. Condiments include mustard and hot sauce and is occasionally topped with a fried egg.

Israel

Bagel toast is a sandwich made by pressing and toasting a fluffy, sesame seed-covered bagel split in half. Then filled with cheese like feta or tzfatit and vegetables like green olives, onions, tomatoes, corn, and various sauces.

Sabich is a stuffed pita sandwich with fried eggplants, hard-boiled eggs, tahini sauce, Israeli salad, hummus, pickled mango sauce, and parsley.

Singapore

Kaya toast is a popular sandwich for breakfast in Malaysia and Singapore. The sandwich is made with two slices of toasted bread filled with kaya, a traditional spread made with sugar, eggs, coconut milk, and pandan flavoring.

Vietnam

Banh mi heo quay is a traditional sandwich prepared with roasted pork belly. It is toasted with a thick layer of salt and spices then sliced and served on a freshly baked banh mi roll. The sandwich is dressed with mayonnaise, pickled carrots, daikon, cucumbers, cilantro, and chives.

North America

Canada

Peameal Bacon Sandwich originated in Toronto, Ontario. It consists of thick slices of fattey and crispy peameal bacon on a Kaiser bun. The bun soaks up the juices from the bacon. The sandwich also includes mustard. Other versions add cheese, eggs, tomatoes, or lettuce.

Montreal Smoked Meat sandwich is made with prime beef brisket marinated at least ten days in herbs and spices. Then it’s smoked and hand-sliced. The meat is placed on rye-bread with pickles, coleslaw, yellow mustard, peppers, French fries, or olives.

The US

Submarine sandwiches are made with long, split bread rolls filled with meat, cheese, vegetables, and seasonings. They eat just like a meal.

Porchetta sandwiches are made with caramelized crunchy skin, soft pork with toppings of cheese, veggies, and sauces.

Pit beef sandwiches originated in Baltimore, Maryland. These sandwiches are made with seasoned charcoal-grilled beef, thinly sliced and placed on a bread roll or sliced white bread along with horseradish, mayonnaise, and thin-sliced raw onions.

Fried egg sandwiches are among American comfort foods. They’re made with slices of sourdough bread, fried eggs, and cheddar cheese. The cheese is placed between two bread slices and broiled and the fried egg is placed in the sandwich before serving.

Meatball sandwiches are an Italian-American invention. Long Italian-style rolls are filled with meatballs, red sauce, and cheese. The meatballs are made with ground pork and beef, eggs, bread crumbs, basil, parsley, and onions. Rolled into balls and fried then placed in the sandwich

Egg salad sandwiches are popular American sandwiches. Hard-boiled eggs are peeled and chopped and combined with mayonnaise, salt, and pepper and placed between two slices of bread which can also be toasted.

Italian beef sandwiches are popular Chicago, Illinois sandwiches. Thinly sliced and seasoned roast beef is placed on an Italian-style roll. Then topped with pickled relish or roasted green bell peppers. The sandwiches are typically dipped au jus on both ends or soaked in the flavorful gravy.

Patty melts are American sandwiches that consist of Swiss cheese and onion-topped hamburger patties between slices of grilled rye bread. They’re served with French fries, lettuce, pickles, tomatoes, and Thousand Island dressing on the side.

Hoagies are the official sandwiches of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The sandwiches consist of Italian rolls sprinkled with oil and vinegar and filled with onions, tomatoes, shredded lettuce, provolone cheese, and different kinds of meats.

BLT sandwiches are delicious sandwiches made with toasted white bread filled with crispy, crunchy bacon, slices of tomatoes, chilled lettuce, and mayonnaise.

Beef on Weck is a popular sandwich in Buffalo, New York. These kinds of sandwiches consist of roast meat, bread, and horseradish.

Club sandwiches consist of bacon, cooked chicken breast, tomatoes, and lettuce between slices of toasted bread with mayonnaise.

Pork tenderloin sandwiches consist of breaded, deep-fried pork cutlets on hamburger buns. The sandwiches include mustard, lettuce, pickles, or mayonnaise. They’re served with French fries and onion rings.

Italian sandwiches are made with long bread rolls filled with cheese like provolone, meat like salami, ham, or mortadella, and condiments like tomatoes, olives, pickles, and onions.

Monte Cristo sandwiches consist of two slices of white bread filled with cheese and ham, turkey, or chicken meat. The sandwiches are dipped in beaten eggs and fried in butter.

Muffulettas are traditional American sandwiches which originally were made by Italian immigrants in New Orleans, Louisiana. The sandwiches are made with split loaves of bread filled with olive salad, salami, ham, mortadella, and cheese like provolone or mozzarella. The olive salad is prepared with olives, capers, shallots, pepperoncini peppers and giardiniera (an Italian relish of pickled vegetables).

Roast pork sandwiches originated in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. They are made with bread rolls topped with sesame seeds and filled with sliced pork roast, roast pork chunks, or pulled pork and broccoli rabe or spinach and melted cheese like provolone.

Maxwell Street Polish sandwiches originated in Chicago, Illinois. They consist of buns topped with grilled or fried Polish sausages topped with grilled onions, yellow mustard, and optional pickled green sport peppers.

The Pastrami on rye sandwich is New York’s signature sandwich. These sandwiches are made with rye bread topped with hot pastrami slices and spicy mustard. They are served with kosher dill pickles on the side.

Cuban or Cubano sandwiches are grilled, pressed sandwiches. They are made with Cuban bread topped with ham, roasted pork, Swiss cheese, pickles, and mustard. They were created by Cuban immigrants in Florida. Variations can include lettuce, tomatoes, and mayonnaise.

The Philly cheesesteak is a Philadelphia, Pennsylvania icon. These are popular sandwiches that are made with thinly sliced pieces of steak and melted cheese on long, crusty hoagie rolls.

Po’boys are sandwiches that originated in New Orleans, Louisiana. These sandwiches are made with French bread topped with a variety of meat or seafood like roast beef, ham, cheese, meatballs, oysters, crabs, or shrimp.

Reuben sandwiches are popular sandwiches that originated in New York City. They’re made with rye bread, topped with corned beef, sauerkraut, Swiss cheese, and Russian dressing.

Mexico

Pambazo is sandwich is made with a Mexican bread called pan basso, a type of peasant bread. The bread is dipped in a spicy, pepper-onion-garlic sauce called guajillo. The sandwich is filled with potatoes, refried beans, avocado slices, chicken, and chorizo sausage.

Torta ahogada is the signature sandwich of Guadalajara. It is made with a salted bun filled with pork, and submerged in a spicy salsa consisting of vinegar, cumin, and chile de arbol pepper. Then filled with onions, mild tomato-garlic salsa and a squeeze of lime juice.

Cemita is a popular sandwich that originated in Puebla. The sandwich is made with a fresh, sesame seed-sprinkled bun filled with shredded cheese, avocado slices, pickled jalapenos, papalo, and meat cutlets like pork, beef, or chicken fried in breadcrumbs.

Mollete is a traditional sandwich originating in northern Mexico. The sandwich is made with a bolillo bread roll topped with refried beans, cheese, and tomato salsa.
