The boundless love a parent has for their child is matched only by their capacity to embarrass them.
On Sun Pillars
Before insta-fam, before closing businesses, before shifting careers, moving, and cancer, my hubby and our only son at the time visited my sister in Florida. She lived on the Gulf-side of the state and we pasty-fleshed ‘land lubbers’ were delighted to experience our first legit trips to a beach there under her savvy guidance. As it was nearing sunset one evening and we were packing up to leave, I noticed that many other people had just begun to arrive! Confused, I questioned my sister about it. She told me that people like to watch the sun go down at the beach. Additionally, she explained that sometimes when the sun goes down and the conditions are just right, a pillar of light stretches up from the horizon right after the sun goes down. Huh...so we stayed to watch the sun go down, too. It was beautiful, but sadly there was no “sun pillar” that evening.

Let Them Eat Cake
Cake. How many delightful flavors, textures and colors of cake can be created? Chocolate, banana, carrot, red velvet and, my absolute favorite, wedding cake!! How many designs? Sheet, layers, bundt, heart, square or cut, trimmed and molded into amazing shapes! Don’t even get me started on frosting! Buttercream, sour cream, cream cheese, ganache! Oh my!

Once a King or Queen of Narnia, Always a King or Queen of Narnia
If I ever needed to join a twelve step program it would surely be for my addiction to books. I don’t ever remember not being able to read and being homeschooled in the 80s, my books and my brothers were my best friends though the order switched from time to time.

The Spider and The String
Kids are often credited with being the most imaginative beings on the planet, but I've learned that parents can be just as creative as well. For centuries and possibly millennia, parents have made up bedtime stories to not only send kids off to dreamland, but also to teach them valuable lessons. During the early 2000s, my mom was one of those parents who filled my childhood head with stories and sparked my love for storytelling.

Only the Lonely
Being the youngest in the family has its ups and downs. Depending on the budget, sometimes there wasn’t enough money to purchase a book or a magazine. Newspapers had the harsh reality parents didn’t want to transfer to their kids. Nope. At an early age, it was unfair for them to face how life was. Really.

The Place We are From
I was a quiet and agreeable child, who has grown into a woman just the same. I imagine it’s blue in the place I came from, as though it were 5:45PM all the time. A country where everyone had a sharp face, into which their eyes sunk deep. Where it was illegal to play Bruce Springsteen records, and blonde hair could save your life. A place frozen not just in time, but inside stories too.
