Awakening
I lay on the bed in just my underwear. The summer heat is stifling. Sticky. No breeze moves through the open window. The old metal fan oscillates slowly, hitching at every turn, threatening to quit at any time. The air it blows isn’t much cooler than the rest of the room. Perspiration saturates my hair and sweat trickles down between my newly budding breasts, as I sit up. Grandma is calling me down for supper. I shrug on my thin cotton dress and head down the stairs.

Let Them Eat Cake
Cake. How many delightful flavors, textures and colors of cake can be created? Chocolate, banana, carrot, red velvet and, my absolute favorite, wedding cake!! How many designs? Sheet, layers, bundt, heart, square or cut, trimmed and molded into amazing shapes! Don’t even get me started on frosting! Buttercream, sour cream, cream cheese, ganache! Oh my!

Her Locket
I race around as quickly as I can, gathering things I’m going to need. I know they will be back. I must hurry. Now that my mom is gone, I have no one. I have no time to grieve her loss. This is how it is now. Keep moving. I have lost everything to this new world. My dad, my sister…..all of my known family. Now my mom. I kneel down next to her, removing the precious heart-shaped locket she wore around her neck for as long as I can remember. It’s mine now. It’s all I have left of the family that once was. Tears streaming down my face, I cover her beautiful face. I am gone.
