My Hero
I am sure most people have a story about how wonderful their moms are, and how much she means to them. In fact, I am sure that every story entered in this contest deserves to win. So, in no way, do I think my story is better than any other stories you might read but maybe just a little different. However, in order to tell about how amazing my mom is I have to tell you a little bit about me because my story only exists because my mom sacrificed everything to make it happen. Without my mom being the embodiment of what a superhero truly is I would not be alive today to tell you about her. I am sure that no matter how detailed of a story I write I can never truly express the depths or lengths my mom went to, or the sacrifices she made, to make sure I had a chance in this life. She is not only my hero, but the epitome of the selfless nature all moms represent to their children.

My Mom is Not a Rib
My mom is not a rib. Throughout my childhood, my mom would often declare, “I am not a rib.” She was definitive, certain. But I didn’t know why she said it. Now, as a mother myself, I am slowly beginning to discover all that this sentence holds.

Love Is A Sacrifice
Dear Mom, Today, I want to honor you with a special letter to tell you why I love you. First, off I need to start with your mother for she taught you; and you have taught me more than I could ever hope to learn from anyone else. You taught me in love, with love, of love and how to love.“Thank you,” could never express even a grain of sand on the shore of all that I am grateful for. Yet, I say it anyway as it is all this language has to offer. So, thank you.

The Ability To Rise
One of my favourite stories my mother used to tell was about defying the odds. Well really, smashing the odds. She always shared the facts of her memory in the same tone and with the same sense of knowing accomplishment. Proud of herself and the feats she had surmounted, yet reserved because of the tolls she knew it took on her longevity. Her sacrifices were both a blessing and a curse. But ultimately, her sense of self worth was the silver lining.

Verna, the Boss of Life
Michigan, in the early 1800’s, the government negotiated terms with the Native Americans where they did not have to leave the area, they resided in. My ancestors did not have to walk the trail of tears due to the savvy negotiations of the untied Tribes of Michigan. Their efforts brought success to the Native people and many families could stay on their lands. I am proud to say that I am living on the same allotted land my Great Grandfather had received in the town of Petoskey Michigan. My grandparent, my mother’s siblings, and now my family live in that same plot of land. When my parents married, they purchased a few lots from my grandparents. After 185 years, we are the only Native family on this street.

Moms
Most people say that their mom is the best mom in the whole world, but in reality every mom is the same. All they want to do is love and protect their children. They teach us things that will help us grow up and lead happy lives. They teach us how to take care of our own families, they teach us how to take care of ourselves and most importantly to care for others. Some moms are never ready to take care of another human being but life happens and they give it their best shot. There are some moms who are not supposed to be mothers but even they try their best. That's what is so great about the existence of moms because no matter the situation and no matter the hardships they try, every single one of them try. One thing my own mom taught me is everything happens for a reason, so when things seem hard it encourages you to hope. You hope for a better tomorrow and you know that what happened today is a lesson learned for the future. Your mother teaches you things she learned in hopes that you won't make the same mistakes, but in the end we all have to learn for ourselves.

Peacock Village
Peacock Village The definition of a Family Tradition is, “an aggregate of attitude, ideas and ideals and environment, which a person inherits from their parents and ancestors”. With family dynamics changing in this world on a daily basis, so does the family tradition. During my time it was something passed down from generation to generation. That’s not true anymore it can be a new tradition that families start and not necessarily one that was passed down. Where does that line cross where it becomes a “Family Tradition” or “Building Memories”? While I say it’s both, friends of mine tend to disagree. This being the case over the last year of lock downs, shutdowns and the unknown, my family found a way to deal with the grand kids schools and activities suddenly being gone, along with everything else in the country.

example and counter
My mother's funeral was at the beginning of this year. Every speaker and contributor to it spoke of how she'd given her entire life over to helping others. She worked tirelessly to improve things for other people. She was beloved for her laughter, her caring, the joy she took in others. She was dyslexic, wheelchair-bound, and in the last five years of her life also entirely blind--none of which stopped her from charity work, from volunteer work, or from her political work. She marched for gay rights, for black lives, for disability rights, for peace. She refused to go quietly into that good night; she was campaigning and fighting for what she believed in right up until she died.

A .38 Special Mom
Moms teach us so many things from the very beginning of our lives. It starts out with the fundamental lessons like how to walk and talk. While these basic lessons are important, our moms teach us far greater ones. I am who I am because of what my mom has taught me.
