Amazing Animals Seychelles
Wildlife of West Africa

Seychelles, officially the Republic of Seychelles, is an island country and archipelagic state consisting of 155 islands in the Indian Ocean.

Seychelles blue pigeons are a medium-sized species of pigeons that are endemic to the woodland areas of Seychelles. They are known for their silver-gray heads and breasts; their wings are blue, and their faces are bright red. These pigeons live alone, in pairs, or in small groups. They enjoy fruits and seeds.

Seychelles giant tortoises are a species of tortoise endemic to Seychelles. There are not many of them left, and they inhabit forested islands. The tortoise is one of the longest-lived animals on the planet, reaching more than 200 years of age.

Seychelles scops owls are a species of owls endemic to the Morne Seychellois National Park on the Seychelles island of Mahe. They have brown and black plumage and long gray legs. Their diet consists of geckos, tree frogs, and insects.
Seychelles sheath-tailed bats are a species of sac-winged bats endemic to the central, granitic islands of Seychelles. (pictured above) They feed in forest clearings at night, roosting in communal colonies by day. These bats are insectivorous.

Tiger chameleons are a species of reptiles endemic to Seychelles. They can be found only on the islands of Silhouette, Mahe, and Praslin. Tiger chameleons are pretty small and an arboreal species living in tropical and secondary forests.
Birds

Brown boobies are a large species of seabirds native to tropical areas on Earth. These are the most widespread and common species of booby. They live and hunt in large colonies, diving into water to take small fish. They only nest on the ground.

Greater flamingos are the largest birds and the most widespread species of flamingo. They inhabit Africa, the Indian subcontinent, southern Europe, and the Middle East. These large birds are born gray, and their diets become pink.

Seychelles kestrels are a small species of birds endemic to Seychelles. They inhabit farmland, scrubs, and forests. They feed on lizards, skinks, rats, and frogs.
Aquatic Animals

Dugongs are a large species of marine mammals native to the Indian and Pacific Oceans. They are herbivores; their diet consists exclusively of seagrass. They are often referred to as “sea cows” because of their grazing habit below the waves. Dugongs live in very shallow, temperate water where seagrass flourishes, and they need to eat plenty of it to stay healthy.

Minke whales are a species of baleen whales found througout the Northern Hemisphere. They are the smallest rorqual and second-smallest baleen whale. Common minke whales are carnivorous. They feed on krill and some small fish. Their diet also includes pelagic crustaceans and cephalopods and varies by region, season, and year.

Pantropical spotted dolphins are found throughout tropical and subtropical oceans. They enjoy eating small fish, crustaceans, and squid.
Islands
Cousin Island is home to the giant tortoise and the rare sooty tern. It is a small island with free-roaming tortoises and Seychelles white-eyed birds.

This is also the island where you can see hawksbill turtles nesting along the sandy coastline.

Frigate Island is home to the Aldabra giant tortoise. These tortoises roam through the forests. Along the shore you can see rare hawksbills and green turtles.

The island is also home to magpie robins, which are the second rarest birds on Earth. You can also see marine life like whales, dolphins, and manta rays.

Mahé Island is the largest of all islands. It is home to Seychelles scops owls and whale sharks. A majority of the population resides in Victoria, the capital. The rest is rainforests and white sandy shores and Morne Seychellois National Park, with the highest point being Morne Seychellois Mountain, where the scops owl lives. The northwestern coast of the island is well known for its whale shark sightings.

Praslin Island is the second biggest island in the archipelago and home to the rare black parrots.

There are sandy coasts and tropical forests. It is one of only two islands growing the famous Coco de Mer coconut.

Silhouette Island is best known as home to the rare sheath-tailed bat. Making their home on the islands are Seychelles blue pigeons, Seychelles bulbuls, and Seychelles sunbirds. The best way to explore this island is by hiking trails.
