I'm Not A Robot: Tick Here 🪡

If A Robot Can't Do It, What Chance Do Humans Have? A Critique Of ReCAPTCHA

By Mike Singleton 💜 Mikeydred Published 8 months ago • 1 min read

Introduction

These are just some thoughts about the number of places and sites that ask us to prove we are human by selecting some random image or series of images.

The music is "Tic, Tic, Tic, It Wears Off" by Todd Rundgress from his album "A Wizard, A True Star".

But...

Think about this, if it wants to check we aren't a robot, that is one of the scavenger bots that wander sites, but a properly programmed robot would be more likely to succeed in proving it wasn't a robot than a human being would. The number of times I fail is worrying.

Remember, Deep Blue was a supercomputer for chess-playing based on a customised IBM RS/6000 SP. It was the first computer to win a game, and the first to win a match against a reigning world champion under regular time controls.

That was nearly thirty years ago, and we know what computers can do now.

Really, if you fail to spot all the correct bits, you are more likely to be a human than a robot, unless the robot is programmed to fail.

Conclusion

A robot is just a programmed device, and if given the correct information to work with, it can come to the correct solution in a very short period of time. We know they can generate books, songs, paintings and films in seconds, and even take over physical work.

This is what frightens everyone because big money sees robots as the cheap option.

Robots can arrive at solutions, but they cannot THINK!! Humans can.

You're correct, Mike. These computers are just as smart as the people who created them, plus they have learning algorithms coded in. There is no telling where they will evolve.

I agree that it's strange how often we have to prove we're human. I've failed those image tests plenty of times. And you're right about robots. They can do amazing things, but they don't think like we do. It's scary that big money sees them as a cheap option. Do you think there's a way to make these tests more accurate in telling humans and robots apart?

  • I'm not sure I can think anymore. Those little tests have stripped it from me. (Hate those little buggers.)

I love the song pick, bring a smile on my fast. 🥰No robot cannot think you better off with a service dog. They have compassion than a robot would

Yes!!!! I fail those so often I have considered downloading a bot to do it for me. I was in tears once after like 50-60 tries locked out of an important site, my husband came home and found me, he finally did it for me. I don't understand why I can't pass them but bots can it is infuriating!
