Marty
"Son? What son? I have no son." Sonia can still remember the detective's words to the policeman and Tony's expression. His father's words appeared to hurt the teenage psychopath more than Marty's stabbing had. An honest cop had learned that his son was one-half a serial-rapist team that for three years had silently wrecked young girls' lives. They had been so successful because of their ruthless inventiveness. They warned their victims that theirs was a secret society; their number was legion, they had informed each girl. Both were lies; it was only the two of them. They threatened the girl's siblings or parents with a similar fate or worse if they went to the police. It was a strategy that worked very well. Dutifully, not one of their victims went to the police. What they did do was visibly deflate; once outgoing, bubbly, funny, social, they all sort of receded into the background, each kept a low-profile, overnight they became meek, retiring, timid creatures.

How did the Wilmington, Delaware Police Chief Handle a Heckler?
The blaze from the tiny candles on the pavement illuminated the pink and blue fur of the stuffed bears. The lights from the candles danced next to the home where Khadija Coving and Frawley Duncan had been shot down in the streets of Wilmington, Delaware.

A Ray of Sunshine
I drifted away for awhile, closed my eyes and imagined myself laying in a field of marigold flowers. Then grabbed one and lightly brushed it against my nose. Futhermore, I released, and watched the wind carry it away. Imagining myself as free as that flower. A feeling of joy, came over me, for a moment. When I came to he was on top of me. He’d abused me so many times I no longer could feel the pain. I could see the blood, and feel the weakness, but no more pain. The first few nights I cried until my eyes were swollen. Nobody could hear my screams.

On Authorities / The Police
The Story: Back in the day I messed up. I was on new medication from my Doctor and I was being a high school kid. Not well informed yet. I knew I should have know better. My Dad had bought me a burrito that night and I ate it all. I smashed that thing, as we did, back in the day when we could not even catch up to our own metabolisms. My Dad said, just stay home. He took away my car keys. I did not listen. I had a spare key hidden in my room. I crashed. I crashed hard. So, so hard. The police, as they do, thought it would be a smart decision to give all of the gory details to the local paper. The police smashed my name. They made me feel worthless. It hurt so bad. So, so bad. Why they just had to ruin a kid's future, I do not know. It was not cool. I crashed my car into a tree. Nobody was hurt, thank God. My Dad, my great, great, Dad kept the newspaper article away from me. To this day I cannot find it online to read it. Do not care. Do not want to read it. Everyone read it. I knew they ALL read it. It sucked. My Dad kept me home from school for a week. The swim team wanted nothing to do with me because I had made them look bad. So, so bad. My coach had been my coach since childhood. He did not care. I think he cares now. I mean, come on, can we catch a break, any break? Oh, well. My Dad watched The Little Mermaid with me as we did when I was younger. I could not breathe. This was just me. A small town, white girl, made out as a bad example. Perfect.

Death by Chocolate
Where I’m from, the little that you had meant so much. One thing that I had was my grandfather’s chocolate cake recipe. I remember as a young child looking forward to the trips to grandpa’s house, it was only 3 or 4 times a year due to how far away he lived. Going hunting and spending quality time was a joy, but none of that compared to the way it felt, walking into the house, going to the dining room and seeing that moist three layer chocolate on chocolate with chocolate icing cake.
