Death by Chocolate

The Day Jesus put on gym shoes

By Howard HoguePublished 5 years ago 3 min read

Where I’m from, the little that you had meant so much. One thing that I had was my grandfather’s chocolate cake recipe. I remember as a young child looking forward to the trips to grandpa’s house, it was only 3 or 4 times a year due to how far away he lived. Going hunting and spending quality time was a joy, but none of that compared to the way it felt, walking into the house, going to the dining room and seeing that moist three layer chocolate on chocolate with chocolate icing cake.

As time progressed, my grandfather, towards the end of his life decided he would share his recipe with me. One thing that is for certain, never did I think that grandpa’s secret recipe would change my life the way that it did. When my grandfather transitioned, my taste for chocolate cake seemed to disappear or transitioned as well. What appeared was a desire to see if I could bake the cake the way my grandfather did.

The first time I decided to bake the cake I took it to the office for all to try. All the people in the office that tried, could not deny its deliciousness. Everything was going great until it got down to the last slice, an argument began.

On one side there is Jesus who we call that because he would wear sandals everyday and had long hair, comes across as peaceful, been working there for about 15years . On the other side was the new guy, who’s name was Tim. Jesus was attempting to get his first taste of the cake, while Tim was attempting to get more.

What Tim didn’t know is that Jesus’s job is to do surveillance of the office, he just sits and watches everyone all day, so the traffic flow to the kitchen area had already peaked his interest. Once he was able to take his break he headed straight to the kitchen to see what all the commotion was about. Upon Jesus’s arrival he instantly noticed the looks of bliss and enjoyment on everyone, and slices of cake either in hand or the plates in the garbage, that appeared as if they had not been used, because there was almost not a trace of chocolate left on the plates.

Tim approached to get the last piece of cake and Jesus says, “back up, let someone else get a chance to have some, you’ve had two slices already!” Tim responded, “well I hope someone else is not you, because you look like you have had a couple extra slices too.”

Jesus was furious because he believed that Tim had no right to be wanting to have more when he had not had any. All of a sudden Jesus stopped arguing and just left. He returned but something was different. He had tied his hair back and put on gym shoes. I instantly knew Jesus was back to attack. Why would Jesus be willing to risk a 15year career? For principle? For honor? No, he was willing to risk it for a slice of that chocolate cake. Jesus stated that in all of the years that he has worked in this place, he has never witnessed so many smiles all at the same time, he knew whatever it was that was causing everyone to be so happy, he wanted in.

When Tim ignored Jesus’s request to allow him to have the last piece, Jesus decided that he was willing to take a fighting stand Greedy people was a pet peeve and when Tim bit into that last piece he was not able to finish it because Jesus wrapped his hands around Tim’s neck and squeezed it until Tim passed out, that’s how he left still with cake in his mouth, I never thought that my grandfather’s chocolate cake recipe would be a reason to kill, but I kind of know it is something one would die for.
