Mystery in Williams Cairn
Mystery in 650 Words

In Williams Cairn, circumstances were darker than they appeared. On the surface, the township looked like it was postcard-perfect, but underneath, there was something evil lurking. Seven people had already been murdered and two were missing. The remaining citizens were scared to go out at night, for that was when the darkness walked their streets. The mayor had invoked a 10 pm curfew, that the police were strict on enforcing.
One of the missing was LuAnn Reed’s little brother, and she went to the police station daily to demand to know what Sgt. Rob Stannis intended to do about it. Each time Rob told LuAnn the same thing. “The department was doing its best but had no leads.” Then he would send her on her way as quickly as he could.
This did not sit well with LuAnn. She wanted answers and meant to get them any way she could. Whether Rob willingly cooperated with her or not, she’d figure out a way.
The next day, she went to the WCPD and was led into the sergeant’s office. The officer who let her in told her that Rob wouldn’t be long and that he was only in a meeting with the chief. Then he left the room, closing the door.
As she waited, she looked around. Her gaze fell on the desk, and she couldn’t believe her luck. Her brother’s case file was sitting on top. Grabbing her phone, she looked back at the door, shrugged, and returned to the desk, LuAnn opened the record to take photos of it. As she closed it, she saw it was placed on top of several other files, so she quickly glanced through them.
Hearing Rob’s voice outside the door, LuAnn quickly returned them to their place on his desk. She hoped he didn’t notice that they’d been moved. Then she sat back down and waited for him to enter the room.
She didn’t have long to wait. He soon entered. He saw her sitting in the chair before his desk and then groaned loudly. Sitting in his chair, he immediately told her there was no new evidence in the case.
Not wanting him to catch her with the file she had photographed, she quickly said her goodbyes and left. As she crawled into her MINI Cooper, she pulled her phone out and began reading the file she’d copied. As she read, she noticed a similar occurrence between her brother’s case and what she had seen in the other files. Hoping no one was watching her from the WCPD, she pulled away from the curb and drove to The Cottage Cafe, one of the last places each victim was last seen.
Arriving at the cafe, LuAnn went inside, but no one was there. She walked towards a door marked Employees Only and opened it. She looked inside, but it just led down a little hallway. Quickly she decided to walk down the hall, LuAnn stopping to test each door. Arriving at the last one, she opened it and was stunned by what she saw. Inside, a group was busy measuring a white crystal substance into tiny jewelry-type plastic bags.
LuAnn freaked out, and ran towards the front of the cafe, with three of the men close behind her. Scared, knowing now what had happened to her brother and the other victims, LuAnn wondered if she would be able to get away from the gang. She turned and looked over her shoulder, falling to the ground as she did so. Crawling away from the men, she was unaware that someone else had entered the cafe until she heard Sgt. Rob Stannis tells the thugs to freeze.
It was a good thing Rob thought that LuAnn was acting odd, so he followed her. If he hadn’t, she would have been the next victim on the gang’s list, and he would have never solved the case.
