But power attracts enemies, and no dynasty lasts forever. When Carlo died in 1976, he left the throne to his cousin Paul Castellano. Unlike his predecessor, Castellano was less street-smart and more business-minded. He distanced himself from the working-class soldiers, living lavishly in his Staten Island mansion. Many of the Gambino foot soldiers felt abandoned and disrespected.

That resentment would sow the seeds of betrayal. Enter John Gotti, a brash, ambitious capo who understood the importance of street loyalty. Unlike Castellano, Gotti made himself visible, mingling with soldiers, celebrating with them, and showing the kind of charisma that earned him the nickname “The Dapper Don.”

In December 1985, the simmering tension reached its boiling point. Outside Sparks Steak House in Midtown Manhattan, Paul Castellano and his driver were gunned down in broad daylight. The hit was orchestrated by John Gotti himself, a bold move that shocked both law enforcement and rival families. In one night, Gotti seized power and transformed the Gambinos into his personal empire.

For years, Gotti lived like a celebrity. He appeared in expensive suits, smiled for the cameras, and became a symbol of the American Mafia. Newspapers called him the “Teflon Don” because prosecutors failed again and again to convict him—witnesses disappeared, jurors were bribed, and evidence mysteriously vanished.

But hubris is a dangerous companion. Gotti’s flamboyant lifestyle and media presence made him a prime target for the FBI. Unlike Carlo Gambino’s shadowy, low-profile reign, Gotti basked in the spotlight. Federal agents worked tirelessly, bugging clubhouses and turning informants.

The turning point came when Gotti’s underboss, Salvatore “Sammy the Bull” Gravano, broke the Mafia’s sacred code of silence. Facing his own prison sentence, Gravano turned state’s witness. His testimony gave prosecutors everything they needed.

In 1992, John Gotti was finally convicted of murder, racketeering, and conspiracy. Sentenced to life without parole, the once untouchable “Dapper Don” died behind bars in 2002.

The fall of Gotti marked not only the decline of the Gambino family but also the end of the Mafia’s golden era in New York. What once was a tightly run empire collapsed into factions, weakened by federal crackdowns, betrayals, and the loss of public fear.
