My Last Love Letter to You
My Love, I am writing this pre-emptively, as I already know the end has come. I was hoping you’d be my forever. At the seasoned age of 28, I am well aware we don’t always get what we want. The biggest, brightest, hottest stars always burn out the quickest. Cliché as it might be, I suppose the same could be said of our relationship.

Escaping the universe, we are physically confined to, is necessary in life. Although, it is impossible. So, how do we accomplish this? We escape mentally. There are many outlets humans use to explore beyond the physical realm. Escapism is a way to forget the woes of life and distract ourselves with something more… well, just more.

A cacophony of alarms pierces my brain and startle me awake. The vibration beneath the skin in my leaves my wrist tingling. Bright white lights flash on, forcing me to squeeze my eyes shut tighter. The alarms stop in unison. I can still feel the residual vibration from the device in my ears.

There weren’t always dragons in the valley. According to legend, there was a time when humans once ruled the land. Billions of them supposedly walked the earth at one time. Today, that is an unfathomable number, considering there are less than 80,000 people that remain.

An Unprecedented Journey
The sun is high and bright. A mother dog and her only surviving pup trot through some tall dry grass. A brief whiff of rotting flesh fills the mother’s nose and sends her on a mission to feed herself and show her young baby how to find food on his own. Grass is so high that it tickles the mother’s stomach. She paves a path for her little one to follow behind comfortably. Occasionally, the young pup nips at some of the grass that manages to swipe against him. It is irritating against his skin where his puppy fur doesn’t cover as much.

Beloved
A young girl holds her mother's free hand with both of her little ones. The mother and daughter's blond hair contrast against their black outfits. The flowers the mother is holding shouldn't be the only bright objects on this spring day. They remind me of when I first came here with my mother to bury my little sister. I sit and watch in silence on top of the cemetery hill as the woman places a beautiful bouquet of bright orange and yellow flowers on top of a fresh grave. The dirt is still moist with grass seeds sitting on top. The grave signifies where her husband is buried. The headstone probably reads, "Beloved Husband and Father." Not that I can read it from my perch on the hill.

Hometown Sweetheart
I stepped out of my rental car and into the thick Alabama air. The humidity was palpable and made my skin tickle. The symphony of cicadas were my only greeting. My father wasn’t aware I was coming into town.

Merlot
My perfectly manicured hands tremored slightly as I reached for the dark red liquid sitting in front of me. I never was much interested in wine. My taste buds were not adjusted to its bitter sting, or maybe it was my mother’s predisposition to overindulging wine that deterred me from consuming it frequently. Either way, a bottle of Merlot seemed perfect for the occasion.

Change
Nobody can make me feel as miserable and worthless as I can. It has always been one of my worst character traits. The self-loathing I can inflict on myself can be so damaging, I find myself wanting to sleep my life away. The beautiful dreams that encompass my sleep, are always more pleasant than reality.
