Rachel Reviews: The Woman who Walked into the Sea by Mark Douglas-Home
I really enjoyed this, the second in The Sea Detective series, named after Cal McGill, who's essentially a scientist who looks at a number of factors like currents, tides and weather conditions to decipher from his analysis of these the location of things lost at sea. This includes cargo lost from ships but it has more recently for him extended to tracing the whereabouts of people lost in coastal waters. This is not a job for the faint-hearted and this book sees Cal questioning his motives for taking on some of the cases he receives. I've not read the first book but I'm assuming that it sets the scene for Cal being a person called upon by a distraught family to find their loved one and perhaps the discovery of what happened to them.

Pause
There was a long pause. Christine looked at Bethan who was gazing at the horizon, her foot still firmly placed on Dave's back, rocking him, almost absentmindedly. Silence ruled across the quarry, only broken by small rocks being nudged and sent running and then a faint plop as they landed in the pool.

Confession. Content Warning.
Christine and Bethan exchanged a look as Dave shouted again, "Laney! You'll never know!" Dave used the tactic that had got Bethan where he wanted her in the first place. He shouldn't be blamed for not thinking clearly. He was under duress. But trying to manipulate Bethan's "weakness" was his undoing.

Desperate
Dave was heavier than they thought and less placid. Once Bethan and Christine lifted him, he shouted and struggled and progress was slow. Dropping him quietened him a little but when he saw the ledge that Bethan had picked out, he bellowed and thrashed.

Bag
Bethan looked at Christine's shocked face as she got up from where she'd been sat and went over to her. You're not the only one who can act, Dave, she thought. With her back to him, Bethan mouthed Trust me and hoped that would be enough to get Christine on board.

Rachel Reviews: Sour Apples: A Novel For Those Who Hate to Read by Paul Jantzen
Sour Apples was a really enjoyable read, a real American boys' tale of summer. Our hero is Jimmy Hamilton, a lively boy who starts off the book with a tree fort but as his mother's fears about the relative safety of such a structure grow (and justifiably so), it looks like the fort's days are numbered, much to Jimmy's irritation.

Time for Answers. Top Story - November 2024.
The knock on the head that Dave had sustained when his wife hit him with a rock had not only injured him but disoriented him. He didn't remember that it was his wife who had assaulted him. He had no idea where he was or what was going on. He knew there were two women and he knew that he was outdoors. He knew that he was tied up and he knew that he was in trouble.

Tied
Dave's head felt like a tribal dance was taking place inside it. He let out a groan as consciousness returned to him and his limbs remembered that they could move. His face felt like it contained lots of tiny splinters and his shoulders felt unnaturally high. He tried to move them forward to lift himself from where he was lying and found that he couldn't.
