Dave was heavier than they thought and less placid. Once Bethan and Christine lifted him, he shouted and struggled and progress was slow. Dropping him quietened him a little but when he saw the ledge that Bethan had picked out, he bellowed and thrashed.

Christine warned him. "Cut out the thrashing! You're not making this any easier on yourself!"

"I'm not going to make it easy for you to kill me, you bitches!" Dave shrieked.

Christine puffed through gritted teeth. "You brought this on yourself, you lying cheating bastard. You deserve everything you get."

Christine and Bethan grunted and heaved and got him to where the land started to taper off. Sharp scree covered the slope and the pool glistened at the bottom. It would not be long before the sun was gone so they needed to work fast.

Bethan took a few breaths before talking, Dave now crying, facing the steep slope. He was scared. Powerless. He felt a boot in his back, the sole placed there to hold him, at present.

Bethan was tired. This had been a long day. It came to her that she was still meant to be meeting Luke. What time was it? She'd lost track. She suddenly felt very old. Hot bath. That would be nice and maybe a glass of wine. She felt like laughing at the ridiculousness of the situation in which she found herself. She hoped there weren't any witnesses to what they were doing.

"Why are you doing this?" Dave said. He was struggling. He didn't think that his wives would kill him but then, he hadn't thought he'd find himself incapacitated. "You need to let me go before you make a stupid mistake."

He felt the boot on his back assert a little more pressure. He gulped. In his very core, he felt very real danger.

"No mistakes are going to be made here, Dave. Not by us anyway," Bethan said. She rocked him.

Dave was desperate. He panicked. It was his downfall.

"Do it then. Go on. Do it. Push me down into the quarry. Do it. And you'll never find out what happened to Laney."

Bethan froze.

"What did you say?"
