The Deer
I open my eyes and am unable to recognize anything around me. There are trees in every direction, as far as the eye can see. Where am I? What happened? I look down at myself and see that my clothes are torn, as if a beast had slashed its claws across my chest. I move the shards of cloth to the side and see that, miraculously, I am uninjured. I see a small cut heal over and disappear within a split second, like the last bit of water running down the drain, never to be seen again. It was so fast that I wonder if I had imagined it.

The Neighbors
The world is such a small place when you think about it. Yes, there are 7.9 billion people, but it seems that wherever you go, there is always someone you know. New York City is the largest city in the United States. You would think that in a population of 8.4 million people, you would be able to hide from people pretty well. But of course, I happen to live in the same building, even on the same floor, as some of the most aggravating and frustrating people I personally know. Because why should I be free to live in my isolation away from anyone I know?

Friends?
I don’t know what is going on between us. Having been friends for so long before, but then I kissed you. I asked and you said yes, I could. I believe there was even a please. Then it was two weeks till we saw each other again. I kissed you on the cheek. You blushed. But we never discussed it. Then you were gone again. When you came back you had COVID so I couldn’t even see you. And now you’re home. Two and a half hours away for the rest of the school year. Are my feelings fading? Are yours? We hardly talk now. It took so much for that first kiss. What happened since then?
