The Sickening
When Dad saw the dragonling on the kitchen table, he did a double-take. I didn't think people did those in real life. Took his glasses off, cleaned them, put them back on. The whole bit. Got close, drinking in every scale. His eyes, already huge behind his glasses, looked even bigger.

The Baby
I didn't see the dragonling at first, tiny as he was, and camouflaged to look leaf-like. A young branch curled up away from its trunk, and around into a circle. The forest viewed through it looked strange, like it was a badly-focused camera lens. I was puzzling at that when the "leaf" moved and I saw him. Clinging to that curved twig: there's his tail, his spine, his head cocked and looking right at me.

Don't Buy My Book
My book-baby A few people have asked about my book-baby, but I've generally been cagey on the details. This is partly because I don't want to spam you lovely lot. Can you imagine if every other post on here was just more LOOK I RELEASED MY BOOK, LOOK AT THE COVER OF MY BOOK, PLEASE BUY MY BOOK... It would be like Twitter, and none of us want that.

The Big Debate: When Do You Take Your Decorations Down?
I thought I'd start the year with a fist fight. So: when do you take your Christmas tree and all the decorations down? There is a phenomenon that unfolds in front of my eyes on social media every year, usually starting some time in November. Several people will post pictures of their beautifully decorated trees, and seem to be almost gloating in how much they delight in it all. I sometimes think a few of them are playing chicken, seeing how far they can push it, or doing it just to wind other people up.

Eff You, January Gloom
With the deccies coming down today/tomorrow, some of you will be relieved it's all over for another year. But if you're like me, the start of a new year is a bit depressing. January is just a slightly shit month. Payday always seems a long way away. Back to work. Everyone is on a diet. The anticlimax after Christmas doesn't help. Winter darkness is no longer punctuated and warmed by twinkling fairy lights. Most of the food gone, and here I am, feeling heavy and dull and slow and grey. It's a month of drizzle and concrete and blahhh.
