Black Scales VII: Another Gift
Orla took another parcel of food down to the lake the next night for the wild girl, and another one the one after that. Brenna showed her how to fish. They got perilously close to the cavemouth, but neither girl mentioned it, or even looked that way. Orla wondered if the dragon was home, or not, and decided not to mention it. Better to squash the wondering. It got easier and easier.

When the sun dipped low in the sky, the ritual began. The parents not yet numbed to it hugged their children close. The ones who could bear it watched the little ones toddle towards the lake; that black stain shrouded in mist. It repelled the eyes, as if it were a magic mirror, an evil one, and not looking at it could save you.

It's amazing how much braver you can be when there isn't a fire-breathing monster nearby. Orla took a good look at the girl, who didn't look like a dragon at all. She'd scrambled up on a nearby rock and was staring down at Orla, hefting a large stick in her hand.

Every evening, the small children were sent to the shore to collect the dragon scales. When the pink warmth and light of the evening had finally faded, mothers kissed chubby cheeks and held back tears. Some shot fearful glances towards the lake, and others were steadfast in avoiding looking in that direction.
