Dear Marietta, Today is April 8, 1865. Tomorrow is when the Battle of Appomattox will happen and I will surely fight that battle. They say this will be the battle to end all battles in this civil war. Tomorrow may be the day that we end this war. A war measured in politics, oppression, and bloodshed.

Peter is getting his things ready as he prepares to head out of his house and to the hospital. “Looks like I’m just about ready to go visit Dr. David so he can tell me when I begin my cancer treatments” Peter said out loud. “I’m only 32 years old and I’ve been diagnosed with colon cancer. I always thought I was invincible, but I found out different yesterday.” Peter then made his way out of his front door and into his car where he set course for the hospital.

Dear Aunty Lana, I wanted to write a letter to you letting you know how much I love and appreciate you and everything that you have been in my life. You gave me some of the best memories of my life going back to when I was just a baby. From spending time with you at our family reunions to coming to California to visit the whole family for the summer. Our memories are timeless.

32 Years of Black History
Hey. How you doin? You know, I would tell you my name, but clearly you found my story so it’s quite clear that you already know who I am. Well yesterday was my 32nd birthday, so you know what that means? Exactly. It means I’m half of 60 and I’m getting old, but it also means that during this month that celebrates Black history I now represent 32 years of Black History.

Black Love
February. This month carries two big labels of significance, three of you count my birthday. This is the month of love due to Valentine’s Day and it’s also Black History Month. Be that as it is I felt like both occasions made this as good a time as any to talk about something that I as an African American feel my community could definitely use a little more of during this time: love.
