born and raised in Southern Rhodesia, a British colony in Southern CentralAfrica.I lived in South Africa during the 1970’s, on the south coast,Natal .Emigrated to the U.S.A. In 1980, specifically The San Francisco Bay Area, California.

The Ndebele, Zulu, and Himba people of Southern Africa.
Southern Africa, which is comprised of South Africa, Namibia, Botswana, Lesotho, Eswatini, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Angola, Mozambique, Malawi, and Katanga Province of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, has many different peoples, and cultures. But three of my favorites are the Zulu, of South Africa, the Ndebele of Zimbabwe and South Africa, and the Himba, of Namibia. Actually, I have two other favourite tribes, the Batonka of Matabeleland North, Zimbabwe, and the San, (Bushman) of Southern Africa. But for this article I’m concentrating on the first three.

Beads of the Bushman.
During a recent tour of South Africa, in April 2004, we stumbled across the last remaining settlement of the Khoisan Bushmen of South Africa. It was about ½ hour outside of Kimberly, Northern Cape, near the town of Barkley West, on the Wildebeest Kuil and Platfontein Farm, and visitors were welcomed at the newly constructed Wildebeest Kuil Rock Art Tourist Centre by members of the !Xue and Khwe tribes, the last remaining community of San Bushmen in South Africa. They are about 4,000 strong.

Baskets from Zimbabwe.
Having been born in Africa, I was well aware of the beautiful hand woven grass baskets that come from Africa. I have always had baskets in my life as either wall decorations or as a bowl to hold fruit or bread on the dining room table. It was just a part of my life. My Grandmother had them, my mother and older sister used them, and my wife and I have them scattered around the house and also as customer shopping baskets when we do trunk shows or trade shows selling our beads. They are just a part of our everyday lives.

Carved stone beads from Zimbabwe
I was born and raised in Rhodesia in 1959, fought in the civil war from 1977 to 1980 when it changed to Zimbabwe. I emigrated to the U.S. , met and married my wife and settled into my new life. It was in 1993 when I realized that time was flying past at a frightening speed and I realized that I hadn’t been back to Africa or seen my family for 13 years. So I spoke to my wife, and we decided to go visit them and search for African trade beads while we were there. After all, that was my wife’s business.Kill 2 birds with 1 stone.

By the 1900’s, the southern African colonial countries had settled on their names for quite some time, printed on maps, stamps, bank notes. There were no more changes. These names were taught in schools, they were settled.

A isolated sandy island off the coast of Angola, Africa, a part of the ever changing Namib desert. And on it, rising out of the sand is a ghost town. Slowly getting swallowed up by the sand, forgotten.Abandoned, neglected, ghostly.

Rural life in Africa
For those of us living in the 1st world, we take our life for granted with its comfort and ease that we enjoy. Sure, we work hard and pay high taxes to achieve that lifestyle, and suffer hidden costs to our health like stress related ailments. Washing our dirty laundry is one such chore that we’ve made easy by inventing washing machine that do most of the hard work for us, but of course we have to pay for that luxury, by buying the machine, building a laundry room in your house, installing plumbing to connect it, not to mention power and sewage connections which all have a cost, so you have to work longer and harder to have that luxury. And is it really a luxury? It’s still physical labor, mundane, boring, time consuming. From the outside looking in, it looks luxurious if you don’t have access to it.

Southern Africa - a pictorial story
I was born and raised in Southern Africa, specifically born in Rhodesia (Zimbabwe), lived in Northern Rhodesia (Zambia), lived in South Africa, in Durban on the south coast Natal province, (KwaZuluNatal), visited Lesotho, visited Swaziland, (Eswani), visited Botswana, visited Mozambique on yearly holidays, visited Nyasaland (Malawi). Didn’t visit South West Africa (Namibia) but my sister lived there and it’s on my bucket list. Also haven’t been to Democratic Republic of the Congo, formerly Zaire, which isn’t Southern Africa but Katanga province is, and it’s on my bucket list. Also haven’t been to Madagascar, Angola or any of the small Indian Ocean islands like Reunion, Seychelles which hug the east coast of Southern Africa. They are also on my bucket list. And lastly, Tanzania, which I haven’t been to, but is on my bucket list. The region is loaded with dramatic landscapes, geological sites, ancient ruins, cave paintings from prehistoric peoples, amazing indigenous peoples, wild animals, and lots more. If you love Africa, it seeps into your soul and stays there forever, urging you to go back, and haunts you with memories of the smells and sights and the food and the people.

Life under Apartheid.
In 1948, British colonial rule ended in South Africa, when national elections brought the National Party to power, and Afrikaners who had been under the control of British legislators and law enforcement since the Boer war at the turn of the century when Boers lost the war, returned to power. Now South Africa was under Afrikaner colonial rule. And even that is not correct - as Afrikaners are not Dutch, as were the first settlers, but are a product of many different peoples that were in South Africa including Dutchmen, Bantu women, Malay slaves, French , German and Portuguese. Because in the early days there were no women settlers the Dutch settlers in the Cape used local black women and Malayasian slave women to satisfy their needs. The offspring of these liaisons were to the Boers a shameful legacy they carried with them as over the centuries when they eventually became Afrikaners, The only African white tribe.

The importance of autobiographical stories
It does not matter if you are well known, famous or led a fabulously interesting life, it just matters that you can pass on your life story to people that would be interested in you and what you did while you were alive, like your children and grandchildren. When I was young, I knew my grandfather, and a little bit about him, but I never interviewed him and asked him questions about his life or his parents life. He‘s dead now, these many years, and I regret not knowing his history. I wish I did. He wasn’t famous or well known, but he was to me. And now I will never know. And really, his history is also part of mine. So interview for parents, grandparents, and if you are lucky your great grandparents, before they are gone.

Khoisan tribe, known as the first people of Africa. They originated in South Africa about 140,000 years ago, and migrated north throughout Africa and into Europe around the Mediterranean Sea. They are Hunter/gatherers, known for being expert trackers and for living off the land in very hostile climates like the Kalahari desert of Botswana and the Namibian desert of Namibia.
