Paul writes: My friend keeps telling me that “alpha males” are the only ones who succeed in love, and that it is a concept backed by science. I have a loving relationship where my partner and I both contribute and support each other. I love her in the sweetest possible way, while at the same time considering her the most intelligent and interesting person I know. But my friend says I need to change my behavior, or my partner will get bored and cheat on me with an alpha. He says I must stop talking about emotions and ensure she wants to submit to me. Is he right?

Q: My partner and I have a beautiful relationship. He is my best friend, the person I confide in. We love each other, respect each other, have fun together, and trust one another. Yet, I discovered that he lied to me. While we were watching a video together on his phone, he received a message. He told me it was from a friend of his. After months, I found out it was from an ex of his. He regrets the lie, saying he did it only because he was worried I might get angry. The message was harmless, and I also know that they are still on good terms. The point isn't that I think he disrespected me, I just don't understand why he lied to me. Can I still trust him, or is a liar a liar, no matter what?

Q: My boyfriend has cheated on me many times. I always found out by chance, not because he willingly confessed it to me. Every time, he cried and begged me not to leave him, saying that he only loves me and that the affairs with others mean absolutely nothing. He said it was just a fling, while what we have is special. Indeed, from the outside, our relationship seems perfect—we agree on everything and always support each other. I think it’s not easy to find another person like him. Should I forgive his flings and focus on the fact that our relationship has a thousand other positive aspects?

We understand each other, communicate well, and share the same values and goals. Yet every time I think about the possibility of moving in together or getting married, I feel a lot of anxiety. Also, I have said to him that I didn't like some things, and I was very clear about it. But he got upset, and I didn't want to create problems, so I decided to let it go. Q: "I dated a guy for about three months. We never got very serious. We went on dates and were getting to know each other; I was looking forward to how it could develop. I thought this relationship had potential and hoped it could become serious. However, he broke up with me over text. I am really devastated; I can hardly drag myself to work. I don't have the energy to go out and have fun. I just want to cry. My friends, though, listened to me cry once and straight away told me to move on, that he was not worth it, that it wasn't that serious and that I should just get over it, go out and have some fun. When my friend divorced two years ago, I spent many nights at her place watching rom-coms over pizza and prosecco to just be there for her and look after her. I understand a three-month fling is not as hard to get over as a divorce, but being judged by everyone because I'm sad over it makes me feel even worse".

Q: My best friend told me that I have communication issues. She thinks I don't express my needs and expect others to know what I want or how I feel. She says it is unfair that I get mad when people don't behave as I want them to as if they should know. Apparently, I do it, especially with the people I date. She said all that because yesterday I had a big argument with the guy I have been seeing for two months. We met on a dating app, and I think it's time to start exploring the relationship exclusively. Yesterday, I told him I had deleted the app a week before and asked if he had deleted it, too. He said he hadn't used it but still had it on his phone. I got furious, as it is so disrespectful to still have a dating app, and left. My friend says I should have talked about it. I think it's obvious that you should delete an app when you are dating someone; there's no need to talk, and he should have known.
