I wish, I wish
Since childhood, I’ve always been fascinated – haunted – by the music of Appalachia, despite not having settled here until well into adulthood. Traditional Appalachian folk tunes are often sung accompanied by the soul-stirring strings of home-grown fiddle playing that’s been passed down for generations. As often, though, Appalachian songs, especially ballads, aren’t accompanied at all, but offered only with a raw, untrained, and undecorated vocal style. It is a striking metaphor for the culture of Appalachia itself, developed by fiercely independent people who make do with nothing of the bells and whistles that a less forgotten region can rely itself on.

The buzzard and the squirrel. Runner-Up in The Metamorphosis of the Mind Challenge. Content Warning.
Everything is the same, never better. The same… The same…. The same….. The same tiresome playlist on the radio, same trees clawing overhead, same beat-to-death roads and same jarring potholes. I feel my breath catch under the sameness as I drag myself to work. The weight is becoming too much to bear. A snapping approaches, but then something startles the sameness: a tiny beacon in the monotonous landscape.

Now Hiring: Aripiprazole Administerer. Honorable Mention in The Life-Extending Conundrum Challenge.
Would you believe that the key to eternal life wasn’t a holy grail, or a fountain spring, or even God himself? It came from roundworms. Well not exactly, but it was through roundworms that the key was discovered – in 2022, Jiang, et al, by running tests on the parasites, discovered that “The clinically approved antipsychotic aripiprazole holds potential as a novel anti-aging drug.”

Alpha Enthusiasm
As every dawn, Jim plopped into his plush leather chair, somewhat clumsily due to a proudly growing midsection (he had taught his wife well the duty to feed him). Caressing his nameplate -James Johnson, Department of Reproductive Control- he glanced over to the three gold-plated frames hanging behind him, flanked by peremptory American flags.

Drowning in Orange Juice
This morning started like any other morning in the life of a distraught, middle-aged man recently laid off. As has been the case since January, a bloated orange, smirking from within the greedy fingers of a pale, buggish alien, headlined each article as I doom-scrolled in avoidance of the encroaching day. The task of putting life back together for a distraught, middle-aged man recently laid off – after 15 years of service, no less – can be daunting, even torturous.

A great-grandmother's mujaddara. First Place in A Taste of Home Challenge.
1 cup of dried lentils Dried lentils, of little money and non-perishable, like the poor and resilient souls desperately seeking new shores here; parched and needing reconstitution like my great-grandmother’s family, who made their way to America on an unavoidable path from Mount Lebanon, their lack having forced the excruciating choice to immigrate.

A Most Haunting Tune. Finalist in 2023 Vocal Writing Awards - Flash Fiction.
I remember my first glimpse of Karolina. I was already a regular here at the abandoned dock, always feigning the need for a stroll to escape my doting husband. When Karolina had stumbled upon the dock, she'd struck me like the first bite of a pomegranate, bittersweet and explosive. In her rusty eyes, I’d recognized the same plight as mine.
