There was nothing about her room in Aphrodite's Inn that stood out to Emma. For being the top ranked sex retreat this side of the Mississippi, it was rather bland with its soft tan walls, fake dark wood floor, and those all too common paintings of flowers and birds that all hotels seemed to possess. The bed was large, soft in a way that had her melting into it. And she’d begrudge that the little kitchenette was nice and the oversize soaking bathtub was truly the centerpiece.

The Piano on the Cliff
Delicate notes from a misplaced piano echoed down the quiet forest pathway. It’s haunting tone drew one footstep after another from the lone hiker on this late evening trail. The grass crunched beneath each of his heavy boot falls. It was the only other sound that danced between the trees, the harsh impact of his boots, and the slow reverb of those piano keys.

Fog coursed through her mind. A droning repetition of rain against the glass her head rested upon. Her heart thumbed like a burning hearth within her chest. Eye lids were heavy as she struggled to raise them and assess her surroundings. She went to rub the sleep from her eyes, but found her arms groggy and heavy to lift.

The last summer storm brought another foot of water to the normally calm stream. The water gushed passed, branches from toppling trees, and stolen items from the distance campsite being tossed about in its wake. Sitting on the side of the slopped drop-off, a young mother looked down at the once shallow passage. It was usually just more than a trickle – the tiniest of creeks, just deep enough for a child to wet their feet. Not too deep for a mother to worry.
