"Repeat after me.” The priest did thus spoke
“I, Mary, take you, Scott,” he began to evoke
“I, Mary,” her word’s caught in a choke
the vow being spoken to tie yolk to matched yolk
The cathedral loomed high with decorations done splendid
a wedding so beautiful, thought all who attended
they stood and did smile when the glowing bride descended
down the aisle where she feared that all of this ended
For all in the pews it seemed a happy sight
a beautiful young bride, under a veil of pure white
a dashing young groom who would treat her just right
but they didn’t know how easy he was to incite
The lace of her dress ran from wrist to bruised wrist
a gift from her groom, a warning she’d so often dismissed
he’d been drunk, and he’d been tired, full of excuses he did consist
yet those fights and those bruises did always persist
He told her he loved her, that he was the best thing in her life
but when he spoke to her, it was with the sharpness of a well-kept knife
it was her behavior, he told her, that their relationship had some strife
but it would all be better when she submitted as his wife
His gaze was now hard as she failed to finish the verse
a tightening of his jaw he would diligently rehearse
the ring to be placed on her finger was adverse
to any chance of happiness that she could still coerce
“I can’t do this” she spoke with a voice that was weak
this man here before her had made her so meek
with tears falling down her faded bruised cheek
she departed down the aisle in a billowing white streak
