Book Review: "The Buffalo Hunter Hunter" by Stephen Graham Jones
I've encountered Stephen Graham Jones quite a bit over the course of the last few years. The anthology When Things Get Dark in which several horror writers attempt to write in the style of Shirley Jackson was perhaps one of my personal favourites he has been involved with. The Only Good Indians was a pretty good one and I have yet to read a couple that I really want to including: Don't Fear the Reaper and The Ones Who Got Away. Stephen Graham Jones is perhaps one of the most intriguing voices in contemporary horror because of his mix of folk, cultural horror and suspense. Now, on to the review for The Buffalo Hunter Hunter...

Book Review: "The Enchanted April" by Elizabeth von Arnim
This book was recommended to me by the wonderful world of the internet. I saw someone talking about its tone and I was definitely in. The book itself is gorgeous, atmospheric and funny and the characters are brilliant. Starting off by being set in Hampstead, our main character Mrs Lotty Wilkins is enamoured by an advertisement of a Medieval Castle in the newspaper. As her husband encourages her to 'save for a rainy day' she has become so thrifty with her clothes that she practically dresses in rags. But now, she's come to her 'rainy day' and she's wondering what to do next...

Mince Pies
You'd probably think it is easy to make mince pies and so, you'd be right. However, as we all know, I like to add my own flavours in and so, it becomes a very different affair (and also a little bit more difficult than I had initially planned). I am aware of the fact that mince pies are Christmas bakes and not necessarily Halloween bakes but I genuinely wanted to make my mother some mince pies because I don't want her eating the Mr. Kipling ones because a) they are coated in sugar and b) she has a heart condition and that can't be good.

Book Review: "Into the War" by Italo Calvino
Used bookstores can be so much help when looking for a good deal on paperbacks. As we speak, I've pretty much finished Into the War by Italo Calvino and I'm sitting in the afternoon light with a cup of coffee, a glass of sparkling water and I'm watching Hitchcock (2012) which is probably not as great as people have been telling me it is despite starring Anthony Hopkins and Helen Mirren. Well, I should actually be more honest - it was awful. At least Calvino's novella wasn't awful though...

Book Review: "Junky" by William S. Burroughs
Here we go, we're back with some William S. Burroughs. If you haven't read my previous stuff about him then here's a quick shortcut of an introduction: I'm on the fence about a lot of his writing. Back in university I read the book he wrote with Kerouac entitled And the Hippos Were Boiled in their Tanks and amongst the phoney bohemians had to almost pretend like I enjoyed it. My review of The Soft Machine can be read by clicking the link here. And also a more 'on the fence' review of The Wild Boys can be read here.

Butternut Squash Soup
As I've said, I'm doing a lot of baking and cooking with seasonal ingredients and though I can't eat the soup due to this diet I'm on, I still like making it and those who have eaten it state it is amazing. It's a bit different to the sorts of recipes of soup you might be used to and it took me about 1-2 hours to perfect (that is with the cooking time). I hope you enjoy this little step-by-step. I'll list all of the ingredients first so you can get them together before you start...

Book Review: "The Running Man" by Stephen King
I have no idea why I chose to read this but it was just there and so I did. Sometimes, you just need some Stephen King in your life. I feel like during the Halloween season you'll probably see more of this from me but yet again, I read this one on my phone. The Running Man is a very interesting dystopian story and, as we know, another dystopian story by Stephen King has recently been adapted and so if you haven't read The Long Walk then I would highly recommend it. However, this review is about The Running Man so let's get back on topic...

Lemon and Ginger Cupcakes
I've made some lemon and ginger cupcakes as I wanted to practice some autumnal flavours. I'm planning something for the Halloween season and well, I'm not sure when I'm going to do this but I wanted to make some cookies and cakes and, I guess look at them since I'm still on a diet. Halloween flavours are the best: pumpkin (which I don't actually like the taste of but it smells great), ginger, cinammon and more. It's all spices and smokiness and everything smells great yet again. Therefore, I got some lemon zest, some ginger seasoning and I made some cupcakes with cream cheese frosting and topped it with coconut.

Book Review: "House of Monstrous Women" by Daphne Fama
I've missed horror involving women and well, even though it's still September, it is approaching Halloween quite nicely. I've bought some new t-shirts involving cutesy ghosts and jumpers with witches on them. I'm prepping myself carefully but my main goal is to buy a pumpkin and of course, make pumpkin filled cupcakes or something. The book House of Monstrous Women is a novel which involves tragedy, brilliance, gore and the resilience of a woman against odds. I thoroughly enjoyed this book for its connections to Filipino culture and all its greatness...

The Death of Charles Walton
Perhaps you've heard about what happened to Charles Walton and the case itself is quite straight forward. However, after the discovery of the body and the numerous theories that began to circulate, it became clear that Charles Walton's death was anything but ordinary.

Book Review: "The Artist of Blackberry Grange" by Paulette Kennedy
Paulette Kennedy is a great writer. If anyone remembers my review of The Devil and Mrs Davenport then they will definitely recall how I couldn't stop heaping praises on her writing style. The Witch of Tin Mountain was also a great novel but I have to be honest when I say Parting the Veil kind of let me down. I think Paulette Kennedy is best when she's writing period 'good for her' novels but then again, she's free to choose what she does with her writing. Let's take a look at her novel The Artist of Blackberry Grange then and see whether it has lived up to my expectations...
