French Impressionist artist Pierre-Auguste Renoir was one of the most prominent painters of the Impressionist art movement. The artist learned a lot viewing the paintings of artists Camille Pissarro and Edouard Manet. He was one of the founding members of the annual Impressionist exhibition.

Bal du moulin de la Galette is a painting that is also known as Le moulin de la Galette. The artwork depicts a Sunday afternoon at an eating and drinking establishment called Moulin de la Galette, located in the Montmartre District of Paris. Renoir lived and worked out of a studio in this district in northern Paris so he would have access to this establishment to complete this painting.

Bois de la Chaise is a landscape painting. Renoir frequently visited the tidal island of Noirmoutier in the Atlantic, off the west coast of France. The northern part of the island is covered by a dense forest known as Bois de la Chaise. It offers lovely views of the Atlantic Ocean through the pine trees.

La Promenade is a painting created during the early phase of Renoir’s career. The artwork depicts a young couple walking through woodland wearing fashionable clothing. This period in history marked the revival of Rococo art of the 18th century.

The Large Bathers is one of many nude artworks created by Renoir. This depicts several women taking a bath. The painting shows the playful nature of the bathers as the woman on the right is about to splash the seated woman in the water. The artwork was inspired by a relief sculpture in the gardens of the Palace of Versailles, the Bath of the Nymphs.

Luncheon of the Boating Party depicts people having a good time. The scene takes place on the balcony of the Maison Fournaise restaurant along the banks of the Seine River in Chatou, west of Paris. In the painting, Renoir included his friends and the owner of the establishment, depicted with the hat on the left. The man sitting down is fellow artist Gustave Caillebotte. The woman playing with the dog was the artist’s future wife, Aline Chrigot.

Pink and Blue is a painting depicting sisters Alice and Elisabeth, the daughters of a Jewish banker, Louis Raphael Cahen d’Anvers, and his wife, Louise. Alice on the left is five years old, and Elisabeth on the right is six years old.

The Swing was created in 1876. It is also a scene from Montmartre, the area next to Renoir’s studio, which is now the garden of the Musée de Montmartre. The woman in the painting is one of the artist’s favorite models, Jeanne Samry. The two gentlemen are the artist’s brother Edmond and one of their friends, Norbert Goeneutte, also a painter.

The Theatre Box, also known as The Loge, is a painting depicting a young couple enjoying a performance at the Paris Theater. The woman is Nini Lopez, who appeared in 14 different paintings created by the artist. The man is Renoir’s brother Edmond. In the 19th century, going to the theater was an important social event in Paris.

Two Sisters (On the Terrace) was completed at the Maison Fournaise restaurant. The artwork depicts a young girl and her sister. Both girls are near the railing of the establishment, and the shrubs growing along the banks of the Seine River can be seen.

Woman Crocheting is a painting that depicts a woman concentrating on her crocheting. This makes the artwork a genre painting, not a portrait. It was acquired by Robert Sterling Clark, the heir to a rich industrialist, in 1916 since he was a great fan of Renoir’s paintings.
