Writing About The Silence

What I Try To Write About

Introduction

This is just a little about the supposed quote from Stephen King and how it applies to the words that I come out with.

"As a writer, you try to listen to what others aren't saying, and write about that silence"

Stephen King

How I Interpret This And How I Apply It

To me, the concept is simple for creative writing (poetry and fiction) as opposed to articles and reviews.

You may think that articles and reviews are easier because you are writing about something that already exists and maybe even is complete. The thing is you have to be accurate and referential to something that exists even if you are saying how bad it is and why it should be avoided.

In his quote, I believe that Stephen King is telling us to be aware of what others are creating and have created, and then you make something that they have missed or not even thought of.

I must admit that when I read and see things, I often weave them into my creations, so I wrote a little shock horror story, but that was heavily influenced by "The Wicker Man" which you may have noticed.

Another was this one influenced by Paul Gallico's "The Snow Goose" and the film "Local Hero":

So I am often influenced by things but every now and then I do come up with things that are straight out of my imagination, and I cannot think of anything quite like the story I have written. These are two examples which I believe fit the Stephen King quote:

Conclusion

Thank you for reading and we have to create whatever we believe is the right thing to put to paper.

I hope I have made you think a little and i will include the Fleetwood Mac song "Go Your Own Way" to accompany this piece.

Great thought piece, Mike, and you're exactly right. All the stories have been told before, just in a different way with different characters.

Love this quote and your interpretation, Mike. Well done!

  • Omgggg yessss, articles are wayyyyy more difficult because we have to get all the facts right. But fiction on the other hand, it can be anything we wanna make it to be

  • I take it as asking the question, "What is it that no one else is saying?" I've long applied that to my preaching & biblical exegesis, constantly asking, "What is it I'm missing, something I've never noticed before?" To discover those things is to find the subject come to life all over again for you/me.

Exactly, we got to write our own way to express what we want to share with whomever. Good job.

Always really interesting to see how other people come up with story/ poetry ideas - thought this was really good. Well done Mike.

  • I take this as a challenge to consider other people's work and thoughts more often. It helps us be better and more interesting, doesn't it?

I like this quote and I think I also agree with your interpretation. Like trying to see what others let out or didn’t see.
