Why I Keep Writing On Vocal

After Four Years

Ray Bradbury Nails It

Introduction

I often write about why I still write, and I loved the Ray Bradbury meme. Writers write, artists paint, sculptors sculpt, musicians create songs, but there are times when I think that I have reached the end.

The music is "Between The Lines" by Janis Ian, who is worth following on Facebook.

Will I Ever Reach The End?

I have been writing on Vocal for four years, and it has brought me more money than any other writing venture (I recently got a payment of 3p from Amazon) and I don't seem to suffer from writers block, but I do suffere from imposter syndrome and the worry that I am writing something that I have previously written and published before.

Luckily, Vocal's excellent search facility makes it easy to check whether I am just repeating myself. Then I think that my old pieces will probably be never seen by most Vocal Creators and I think of these words:

Though I just decided to try a Sestina, and I didn't know what I was letting myself in for

This was a bit like when I attempted to re-imagine Edgar Allen Poe's "The Raven"; I did not know it was an 18 stanza, 108 line poem but I did manage to complete it, and it is the Vocal piece I am most proud of.

I am extremely lucky that I seem to be able to take inspiration from anything. I have a group of Vocal Creators who love and appreciate my work and are very supportive, and I try to reciprocate when I can.

The fact that I am writing this piece shows that I can really write about anything.

My impostor syndrome tells me I am lazy when I write poetry, and even more so if I publish two or more poems in a row. My sestina proved to me that I am not a lazy poet.

Every community can be an inspiration for me, and I have been published in 49 Vocal communities. Yes, 49 because I have a couple of articles in Resources. These are they:

Conclusion

So going forward on Vocal, I will strive to be original and try new things, but I will probably also repeat myself, so sort of apologies for that, but if you have not seen me say it before, then all is good.

Thank you so much for your excellent support and for reading my words.

I can relate to the imposter syndrome you mentioned. It's tough to shake the feeling that you're repeating yourself. Good thing Vocal has that search tool. I've had similar worries when working on technical projects. Also, kudos on completing that Poe-inspired piece. It's great you found inspiration in different communities. Do you think it's easier to come up with new ideas when you're part of a supportive group like yours?

Without you there would be a gap in Vocal. Your comments, and works have value, you are no imposter. I like that you are going to challenge yourself this year, looking forward to reading what you create

Well done, Mike. I've been around since 2020 with my ups and downs, sometimes not publishing for a stretch, but I love Vocal. Sestina, I haven't indulged more than once, perhaps a future project. Finally getting to your Raven piece this morning. You will see me there in the comments!

🏆Keep it up Mike. I always look forward to reading your stories even at times I might not stop and comment sometimes. I could not listen to your song choice, it's not available in the US I think
