Thoughts On Our Vocal Comments

And How They Are Counted Up For The Leaderboard

Introduction

I have written before about our commenting on Vocal here:

I was not sure whether to write this (although is true of many of the pieces I publish on Vocal.

The music is the excellent "No Comment" by Serge Gainsbourg, though you may have to brush up on your French to appreciate it fully.

So What Do I Have To Say About Vocal Comments?

This is just really short, and while it, ironically, could be a comment on another article, it is just how comments are valued on the Vocal Leaderboard.

I love it when comments expand on the original article or story, and while it is nice to get a "Wonderful", "Great Story", or an emoji, because they let you know that someone has read your story and taken the time to let you know.

Should these short comments be considered with the same value as a comment like this one?

Now that is a comment that added content to the story, and it was good to see Randy on this week's most supportive creators.

One story comments, I remember, the winner had significantly fewer comments than some of the honourable mentions. When I questioned this, I was told that the replies were counted, but replies are often at least 50% by the original author, so do they count as well?

I don't expect an answer from Vocal, but I am just putting this out as food for thought.

I think you can't place in the same category twice in a row, and you can't place on the leaderboard more than once. So this is a factor as well?

This piece definitely belongs on that leaderboard, congrats mate! Also, great work on this piece too! :)

  • Wooohooooo congratulations on your Leaderboard placement! 🎉💖🎊🎉💖🎊

I have shared my views on your last story about comments. I think these are genuine comments, and those readers are simply trying to accumulate numbers. For example, I wrote two stories a couple of weeks ago and they were published. I got a 'great story" and "really like it" respectively, even within a minute of it being published. That is great except that they were both at least a 4- 5 minute read??? I have also noticed lately that readers(??) are hijacking comments made back to the author, with "read my story," or some other AI dribble.

  • Thanks for the shout out, Mike! I've wondered the same thing, though then I find myself asking, do I comment because I want to make the leaderboard or because I want to interact with the writer & what they've written? Unfortunately, I must admit that my heart is not always in the right place. But I really do want it to be, even if I have to remind myself of that fact now & then, lol.

  • Vocal should have something to differentiate between a genuine human made comment and an AI-Generated comment. For now, this is what I want Vocal to improve

Good eye Mike! I've noticed the discrepancies the number of comments as well! Thx 4 bringing them to the light! Excellent work!

  • It's a question of balance-taking in all things before awarding someone

Great article, Mike. I have a question, though, does being most supportive mean leaving the longest comments, or reading the most and leaving the most comments? I do think they need to put a counter on each "read" and comment, and if it doesn't match the story's suggested read time, it should not be counted towards the leaderboard count. I'm sure there is a program for this.

This question has been on my mind, yet, while I pondered you actually wrote something about it. I think I should start doing that as well. Cheers

Wow, Vocal really does not like me commenting.

Quantity vs quality has always been a topic of debate when it addresses comments on Vocal. How does somebody tell when a comment is truly worth its substance? We get AI and spam comments all the time, and even when those accounts are called out they can always run through a new thing of generated content to comment. Everything that glitters is not gold as few words are truly golden in an Era where silver tongues are scarce. In my honest opinion, everybody could do better when it comes to commenting in terms of both quantity and quality. That includes You, too. Writer, reader, typer, etc. Tinker Tailor Soldier

Marie381Uk (You) less than a minute ago I do think if someone comments like I do few words, it should count the same, as I am sometimes not sure what to comment, if it’s not a subject I am familiar with too. Some time my alert bell has over 100 in and it can take a hour reading and commenting. So when I write fabulous, or brilliant it’s my way of saying well done. I have honestly liked and read. Just answering with emoji is not my thing though. I also notice a lot of people from other speaking countries use the same word sent as soon as they get the alert. Once I pressed my poem to submit posted. When alert came in with a comment, well done this was with in 1 min of a proval. It was a 4 min read lol I rest my case lol ♦️♦️♦️ Read more
