Observations On Vocal Notifications And Posts In Facebook Groups

Introduction

This may seem like a bit of a rant and that I am having a go at certain Vocal Creators but I am not, we all have our own ways of doing things. Also, the Vocal side of it is caused by Vocal's decision to force us to receive publication information in our notifications when we already get it in our Subscription Feeds, the All Laters Stories Tab and now our Home page.

People who know me will know that I have difficulty dealing with too many things, the joke is you ask me about the weather and I forget my name. Last week I had a terrible day at work because I was overloaded, but got support and all ended well.

The Flood

When I see someone posting story after story on my Vocal feed I immediately think "AI Generated Content". It might not be, it may be that the Creator has written those stories in Word or Docs and is publishing them one after another, another one is that they may be short-form pieces and we get lots of those when Vocal has a short-form challenge.

People tell me I subscribe to too many Creators and I should drop them to manage my Vocal notifications. Most of my Vocal Creator friends do not subscribe to me because I usually post every day, and that is fine, I know how I feel with my notifications flooded with publications.

I remember once that two pages of my publications were by the same person. I unsubscribed because I wanted to see other things in my publications. What I really want to see is comments, new subscribers and then hearts and insights, I don't need publications though I know some people prefer everything in one feed where I prefer to compartmentalise.

In the Vocal Social Society, we encourage Creators to put their stories into threads on the Marquee Featured Strip but we allow solo posts as well. The problem is that a lot of people ignore the threads and solo post, but what this means is the post drops down the discussion feed so may not be read at all, whereas in a thread it stays as part of the featured list.

We have a thread for Challenge Entries, official and unofficial but most of these are mine and I feel I am just promoting myself, whereas I want all memners to add to this and then post their entry in Great Incantations.

But some Creators flood VSS with posts and that means I ignore them once again. When I post in a group I may do two on the odd occasion (I am thinking VIM) but never more because I know how I feel about others flowing.

Conclusion

If you have a lot of stories to share, it is good to phase them if you can, but that is just my opinion. I like to see variety.

If your stories are linked include the links in the actual stories, that makes it easier for people like me and I am more likely to follow linked stories than if they are in a flood.

I hope I haven't annoyed anybody, and remember these are just my personal opinions.

Thank you so much for reading, but I would love to hear your opinion.

You are entitled to your opinion and share it. The home page also notifies me of the people I prescribe to as well.

  • Since Vocal started notifications, I stopped engaging in the groups because I cannot deal with more than one thing at the same time. So notifications is the one place I use to reply comments and read new publications. Vocal should really allow us to be able to customise our notifications

I agree on the notification feed. It's not necessary to have new post from subscribees there where they show up in two other places.

I would love to have at least the option to filter my notification feed. I like the new home page but you're right, it feels a little overwhelming when new story posts are coming from multiple places

As a new member I'm deeply afraid of paying the wrong places and I would love to get guidance, if I do wrong, also because I am not native English speaking and I might not understand things correctly. Thank you.

Not sure if they've called this out before (/if you're already aware), but they do now provide the ability to turn Comment notifications off under Settings, which isn't what you're describing, but it does signal that *other* notification filters may be on the horizon. For if they have found a way to limit those types of notifications, it stands to reason they can apply that logic to other types.

You've made some good and helpful points. Helpful because I don't exactly know the etiquette of these groups but I'm learning. One site I'm on I was so excited to get there I posted a 127 poems in one night. hardly anybody read them and I realized that I had done the wrong thing. Silly me.. lol Thanks for sharing this!

We are all allowed to voice our opinions. I remember a few times I had like 50 notifications to read articles and poems. It was a lot at one time and I thought the same thing they must have them stored and now publishing them. Good work on this article.
