The Warm Hug to Myself on My Recent Accomplishment Whenever you find yourself talking negatively to yourself or judging or shaming yourself for something you have done wrong maybe today, or in your past, think about saying those harsh words to the younger version of you. How atrocious of you would it be to talk to your inner child like that, of telling the most disdainful of phrases that would never leave your mouth for the people you love? We live in a world where it is normalized to treat yourself with grit and harshness and to be hard on yourself because guess what we live in a hustling world where everybody charges with lightning speed towards their goals and if you render yourself with steadiness and ease, we are losing the damn game of life.

Good Afternoon
Mar 30, 2022 Double J Saloon Good afternoon, I’ve been talking to dead people — sometimes out loud! I’m drinking a Bloody Mary at Double J’s on Lake City Way thinking about youthful American masculinity at 3 PM in the afternoon. I’m obsessed with someone who seems to glorify it, calls it pure and innocent. I don’t know if I agree, but I do see the gleam: Earlier this week my coworker was so shocked I am in the Navy that he followed up, wanted to hear more. Multiple times that I’ve dressed more heteromasculine-conforming to work, my manager has pointed out my appearance. I’m not good at being in the Navy but maybe I’m great at dressing like it. I guess considering myself as one type of “American” or another has shaped the ways I perceive myself, and I acknowledge the ways I am expected to present my image to the world. I’m interested in why a specific type of ideal masculinity seems to be glorified and it’s made me want to investigate who and what I worship.

How crazy it is to be in the midst of discomfort and know that it is necessary for the next step. That to reach a place of greater satisfaction and contentment, I need to overcome, understand, overcome, face what is weighing me down now. But when in fact I am not very clear about what that is yet. I do not see clearly. I do not feel anything tangible. I only feel discomfort. A dislocation. You know when a photo loads slowly, how each pixel fills the resolution and the sharpness seems to gradually give clarity to an increasingly lucid image, but what appears to me increasingly clear is what brings me so much discomfort, in this case, what is my dislocation, my discontent, my thorn in my side, which hurts, hurts not enough for anyone else to notice it, but enough for me to live in constant tension and never be able to relax my shoulders.
