What the critic says
Ever-conscious of my limited talent as a poet, I recently wondered if generative AI could help? Not to write the poetry of course (please give me some credit) but to critique my work. To run through my draft, give an opinion on the quality of the work, perhaps even make suggestions for improvement. I thought I would give it a try and here's what it says about the poem I fed into the system.

The Broken Clock
I am a broken clock. I see the other clocks always proudly displaying what time it is. With confidence, and unwavering belief in self, they boldly state that it is 8:15. I am sat here shamefully mumbling that it is 2:47. I know that it isn't 2:47. I have no idea why I said it's 2:47. I have regrets that I've said it's 2:47. I have hurt others with my misinformation. The man is late for work. The woman forgets a call with her sick mother. The child wakes up early and unrested. The couple misses their flight. Despite this, I continue on. Minute after minute. Hour after hour. Relentlessly letting the world know that it is 2:47. I will not stop. I will not yield. I will not allow myself to take the time to discover the true time. I will simply be wrong, with every choice I make.

The sorrow of a nation.
The Nakba of 1948: The Tragedy of a Nation There are some dates in history that mark not just an event, but the shattering of a nation’s entire existence, identity, hopes, aspirations, and dreams. For Palestinians, May 15, 1948, is just such a day—the beginning of a national catastrophe, which they call “an-Nakba,” meaning “the Catastrophe.” On this day, a new state called “Israel” was born on the world map, and with it, an ancient land of national identity was destroyed.

"Faith written in Sumaiya's blood"
The evening light had faded in the streets of Mecca. There was dust and silence in the air. But an elderly woman was standing huddled against the wall of a house—something greater than fear in her eyes—indignation, protest, and the glow of faith. Her name was Sumaiya bint Khayyat, the first female martyr in the history of Islam.

It is almost impossible for any human creation to say.
A verse from Surah At-Tariq that carries an exceptional scientific hint at the mystery of human creation. In verses 5 to 7 of Surah At-Tariq, Allah says: “Let man consider what he is created from. He is created from a flowing water, which comes forth from between the back and the front.” The key words used in Arabic are “ماءٍ دافقٍ” (flowing water) and “الصُّّْبِ وَالتََّائِبِ” (from between the loins and the sternum). A scientific analysis of this verse takes us to an astonishing level of human reproductive biology that is almost impossible for any human writing from 1400 years ago.

Finding an Audience. Top Story - May 2025.
I write because I have things I want to say. I want to be read. My words might soothe. They might articulate the complex. They might provide escapism into other’s lives. They might have an emotional truth. They might make people laugh.
