Eight Vocal Challenges

How It Affects Creators

By Mike Singleton πŸ’œ Mikeydred Published 11 months ago β€’ Updated 11 months ago β€’ 1 min read

Introduction

This is just some observations on how multiple challenges affect me and possibly other Vocal Creators. These are the challenges now:

The music I have included is "Hard Times Of Old England" by Steeleye Span.

The Vocal Multiple Challenge Effect

The last time this happened I was in shock, possibly because I thought it was something I had to do, like homework or a report for work. It wasn't, but I still worked through and entered all the challenges.

The time I have looked, and because I am not a very good writer or poet, there are a few that I won't be able to enter. I don't know if that is a good or a bad thing. I know some people will be tearing through them as I am penning this piece.

This time I feel a lot more peaceful about it, I may enter some if I feel capable, but as I have said before, Challenges are just prompts for me and if I do get chosen then that is a bonus.

By dropping them like this, I suppose Vocal save themselves some work, although they have put a lot of work into getting these challenges together for us.

I know it will make a lot of Vocal Creators happy, especially those who will only countenance official challenges (there are lots of very good unofficial challenges and then there are the Vocal Prompt Articles in resources) so I am seldom short of things to write about.

The last one gives us over two months to enter, so this means there are going to be a lot of prize drops over the next two months.

Conclusion

I doubt I will enter all of these, and am dropping my own unofficial Challenge on Saturday, but I will not be stuck for inspiration and things to write about.

I just have to thank Vocal for dropping this lot in our lap, and you for reading this.

Oh, and check the word count when you enter, some have a minimum one thousand words.

Good for you on sharing this. Currently, I'm not feeling well, so I'm not spending much time on Vocal. I see challenges, and some speak to me, and some don't - I guess that is part of the reason why they dropped so many altogether - to speak to many different people. When the challenge speaks to me, IF words come to me, IF I have time not stolen from family and peace of mind, I enter. Congrats on making the Leaderboard! πŸŽ‰πŸ₯³

There is definitely food for thought in the multiple challenges Vocal have dropped. But I don't think I will be entering any of them. None of them have made me feel - ah, I know what I need to say/write about here. I remember you writing last time a pile dropped that you felt it as a stress, so I'm glad this time hasn't had the same effect.

  • Wooohooooo congratulations on your Leaderboard placement! πŸŽ‰πŸ’–πŸŽŠπŸŽ‰πŸ’–πŸŽŠ

  • Well written, congrats πŸ‘

The many-challenge drops are always such a nice surprise! Like you said, using them as prompts really does provide a lot of writing opportunities, but the unofficial challenges truly are a blast as well!

Gotta admit, I saw the Lyric challenge and instantly thought of you, Mike. Pretty sure I've seen you record yourself playing guitar/singing before, so seems like a perfect fit.

Yes!! I was also in shock when I saw them - I did a little happy dance in my room afterwards, lol. Seeing so many challenges posted at once also made me realize that the Letters Through Time challenge isn't a V+ only one, since it doesn't have the V+ badge. I wouldn't have noticed if they weren't all up there like that! All very cool/exciting stuff!

I wonder why the result date on all.is 6 days after submissions close. That seems very odd. A mistake perhaps?

Crikey! That's a lot of challenges!

Mike ... " and because I am not a very good writer or poet," Seriously, in the nicest possible way, which planet are you on? I will enter some, but not all, because I think it is a good way to develop broader writing skills and takes me closer to mimicking your success in your personal challenge of writing for each community. Looking forward to your next unofficial challenge.

  • Now that's news to me. Last I saw there was only the Love Letters Through Time challenge left running. Now there are eight?????

  • Looking at those made me so overwhelmed. My free year of V+ was up last month, so I don't really have to worry. The only challenge that caught my attention was the 500 Word Shockwave

This is going to be an interesting few weeks with all the challenges

  • Caroline Craven11 months ago

Yes wow! Vocal has definitely ramped up the challenges! I am going to look at them later. Enjoyed your article and agree - sometimes it’s overwhelming!

  • Alyssa Musso11 months ago

I was shocked to see how many were posted! It can be a bit overwhelming with so many great prompts and having my brain firing on all cylinders coming up with ideas for each one. I think I will try to enter a few if I can find the time and the energy to draft something decent. I like to use the challenges to break into new genres and forms of writing, but sometimes I push myself a little too much!

I think interpreting challenges as writing prompts without getting too vexed about competition and prizes is a very sound strategy. Your reactions to the moves Vocal makes are always intriguing!

  • Alexandria Stanwyck11 months ago

There are so many! Thankfully, there is some time before the first of the many due dates. Some of them look interesting as well, like the self-editing epiphany. Like you, I don't know if I'll submit something to every challenge. Things with work have changed and I don't have the time (and sometimes the energy) to write like I used to. But I figuring the worse I can do is try, even if it's just for myself.

  • TheSpinstress 11 months ago

Some of these are definitely too much for me, too. Still, I prefer there being a lot of available challenges, rather than those times when there's just one for what seems like forever!

  • Mark Graham11 months ago

Good job on this and I am starting to look on these challenges as prompts myself.

That is quite a lot - makes my head swim
