Gerard Garofolo is Still Larger than Life at Wesleyan University
Please see tip, pledge and subscribe buttons below or send tip via venmo at @Rich-Monetti Slideshow If by the unlikely chance you’ve forgotten Gerard Garofolo and his outgoing ways, let the 2023 John Jay grad remind you in his own words. “The parties were awesome. They were a lot of fun,” said the Wesleyan Freshman. “I had a great time at school.” But the former lineman didn’t get into one of the top academic schools in the country by simply grinding hard on the football field and reaping the social rewards before, during and after.

Somers Alumni Seek Name Change at Athletic Field in Honor of First High School Football Coach
Please see tip, pledge and subscribe buttons below or send tip via venmo at @Rich-Monetti Shenorock Slideshow The modern sports complex at Somers High School in Somers, New York dwarves the memory of the simple football field that once prevailed. Regardless of the evolution, a movement has begun among alumni to rename the field in honor of a giant who they credit with putting Somers Football on the map.

Not a Purdy Sight (NFC West Preview)
The NFC West never fails to please this humble football fan. I still remember the old geographically incorrect NFC West from my childhood and teenage years, and this current version that has existed since 2002 remains every bit as captivating. I've always been fascinated with this division, and it increased in 2016, when the Rams returned to Los Angeles. Because I live in SoCal, I get to see this madness on my TV a lot, due to location, and also due to how strong the Niners are.

CFL Week 8 Recap: The Rabbit Hole
The Winnipeg Blue Bombers are officially screwed. Saturday's contest between the Blue Bombers and the Toronto Argonauts was close and hotly contested, but in true "appearances can be deceiving manner," this was in spite of the Bombers committing turnovers left and right--four of them, five if you count a crucial one on downs when the Bombers were deep in field goal range. The game ended up going to overtime, which was good, because the Argos needed this one. Plus, CFL overtime is always fun, because anything can happen.

Birds of Prey (NFC South Preview)
You know how people love watching NASCAR for the crashes? And how people love watching hockey for the fights? Also, you know that movie or show that is absolutely awful, yet you can't bring yourself to get away from it? That's the NFC South. The NFC South has been the trainwreck of trainwrecks for the last two seasons now. In each of the last two years, it's only taken nine wins to take the division, and the team leading the division has had a losing record two-thirds into the season both times.

The Power of Jordan Love (NFC North Preview)
Ah, the NFC North. What an absolutely beautiful and chaotic disaster! I absolutely love the NFC North, and no, it's not just because I'm a Packers fan. The division is rich with history--at least six decades of rivalries. In addition, all of the teams are in cold weather cities, though two of them play in domes. The NFC North is basically the original NFC Central (before the Tampa Bay Buccaneers were placed in the old Central in 1978 until 2001), and as I said, it's an absolutely beautiful and chaotic disaster.

CFL Week 7 Recap: Tiger-Cat Strut
It has not been easy to be a Toronto Argonauts fan in 2024. We had to start the season dealing with the fact that our QB, Chad Kelly, is out of his damned mind. So Cameron Dukes took the helm, and it's been...decent. We've had our ups and downs, but we are coming off a big up: handing the Montréal Alouettes their first loss of the season. Spectacular! The Argos were in Hamilton for the first meeting of the season against the Tiger-Cats, a big rivalry game. Now, even though the TiCats entered the week with no wins, there's no such thing as an easy win in the Canadian Football League. Plus, it's a rivalry game. Even so, I figured the Argos would be up to the challenge.
