The next IPL Mega Auction is expected to span two days, similar to the 2022 auction. Historically, the auction has taken place in February (2022) and December (2023, 2024). Hence, the IPL 2025 Auction could be scheduled for either December 2024 or February 2025. Following the conclusion of the 17th season, the IPL chairman has provided significant updates about the upcoming auction.

Confirmation of the Mega Auction

The IPL council chairman has confirmed that the Mega Auction will occur in 2025. Each franchise will likely be granted the right to use a match card. The IPL 2024 Auction marked the first time the event was held outside India.

Player Listings and Retention Rules

There is no fixed limit on the number of players listed for the IPL auction, as it varies annually based on sign-ups and country approvals. According to IPL chairman Dhumal, teams will be allowed to retain only 3 or 4 players, similar to the 2022 mega auction, which saw 204 players sold for a total of Rs. 551 crore. The final decision on retention numbers will be made after discussions between stakeholders and the BCCI.

The usage of the Right To Match (RTM) card is set to be a key topic of discussion for the upcoming IPL 2025 Mega Auction. The RTM card, which allowed teams to match the final bid for a player associated with them in the previous season, was an option for teams during the 2018 auction. However, it was not utilized in the last mega auction ahead of the 2022 IPL season. Its potential reintroduction could significantly impact team strategies.

Another crucial point under consideration is the increase in the player purse. According to a report from Cricbuzz, the purse for each team could rise to Rs 120 crore for the upcoming auction. This increase would provide teams with greater flexibility in assembling their squads. The cost of player retentions will also be a focal point of these discussions.

In the 2022 mega auction, the first retention cost each team Rs 17 crore. With the anticipated increase in the player purse, this amount is expected to rise. Cricbuzz speculates that the value of the first retention could go up to Rs 20 crore. These changes, if implemented, will add a new dimension to the auction, making it even more competitive and strategic.

KL Rahul, known for his elegant batting and versatile leadership, might leave Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) after a public altercation with the team owner during the last season. 2rd : Rohit Sharma to join this IPL team, leaving Mumbai Indians

Rohit Sharma, one of the most successful captains in IPL history, leading Mumbai Indians (MI) to five titles, is rumored to leave the franchise. Discontent reportedly arose after Hardik Pandya was appointed as his successor for the IPL 2024 season, leading to a strain in relationships within the team. Sharma's departure would mark the end of an era for MI.
