Starmer Arrives in Ukraine.

Signing Historic Treaty.

By Nicholas BishopPublished 12 months ago 3 min read
Prime Minister: Starmer.

British PM Sir Keir Starmer has arrived in Kyiv. He was met by ministers in Zelenskyss' government. The two leaders will sign a historic treaty. Yes, in this treaty, there will be security guarantees to further aid Ukraine in its war with Russia. However, the treaty is a 100-year treaty for the two nations. Not only on the security and the military front, but in science, industry, and all other fronts. So in essence the treaty aims to be beneficial for both the UK and Ukraine.

Unlike Johnson and Sunak, as Prime Minister, Sir Keir has not rushed to meet Vlodymyr Zelenskyy. Boris and especially Rishi, had a warm relationship with the Ukrainian President. Sir Keir met Zelenskyy when he was leader of the opposition in Ukraine. Now he is meeting the Ukrainian President as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom.

Sir Keir has described Vlad The Invader's incursion into Ukraine as a "monumental failure". "Putin tried to wrench Ukraine away" but Putin has failed in that drive. Instead, Starmer went on, the invasion pushed Ukraine and its Allies even closer together. That includes Britain, Starmer has continued the line of his Conservative predecessors. That is supporting Ukraine no matter what Russia does or tries. That goal in a sense, makes sense, NATO has been fighting a proxy war with Russia conventionally. Ukraine has been the battleground to keep Russia at bay. The thought is that should NATO's effort to help keep the Ukraine war machine going fail, we would all be in trouble. Vlad The Invader would be triumphant. As to whether a victory in Ukraine would embolden him to attack other countries is unknown. Some say he would, others say he has designs on Ukraine and that's it. We may be nearing such a scenario where a Russian victory is nearing. Russia despite huge setbacks and losses in men and material, is slowly making progress.

With this in mind and the second coming of Trump, Sir Keir may have scored a "blinder" in cricket terms. By travelling to Ukraine now, and- signing this treaty, Sir Keir keeps the pledge of aiding and cooperating with Ukraine. So no matter what Russia or Trump does, this treaty can protect and solidify a cast iron guarantee of friendship and cooperation between the UK and Ukraine.

This treaty will be important for Zelenskyy. He is very aware of Russia's progress on the battlefield and of Trump's second term as President. So a treaty with a Western friend like the UK will help Ukraine not just now, but in the future. Since Russia's invasion of Ukraine, the UK and Ukraine, have forged a close relationship. Not only in aiding Ukraine with weapons and training, but accepting 20,000 Ukrainians into our country.

Will Ukraine ever join NATO? NATO members have baulked at allowing this so far. If NATO accepted Ukraine into its fold, it would certainly antagonise Russia even more. If Ukraine had been a member of NATO, when Russia attacked we would have been at war. The raison-d'etre of NATO is one simple mantra: "If one nation is attacked, we go to its aid". So the US, UK, and other NATO members would have deployed forces and we would fighting Russia in Ukraine. If Ukraine had been a member nation of NATO would Russia have attacked? Would Putin have thought twice or would he have gone ahead anyway?

Marco Rubio Trump's pick for Secretary of State or Foreign Minister has said Russia and Ukraine must compromise. Trump has said he wants wars in Europe and the Middle East wrapped up. At the moment, Hamas has agreed to a 3-stage ceasefire between it and Israel. Despite this, Israel has been bombing Gaza again before the peace agreement came into force. Israel has also put off discussing the ceasefire saying Hamas is demanding more prisoners in Israeli jails be released. A compromise between Ukraine and Russia in their war is obviously, the way forward.

However, both the Hamas-Israel war and the Russian-Ukraine conflict may not be that easy to overcome. While we can all suggest peace for both wars,,and no matter how much pressure we put on all sides only the belilgerants themselves can forge real peace in the end.
