Rachel Reeves: No Trade Wars with Trump.
Trump, Tantrums, and Tariffs.

Donald Trump, with His "America First" policy, is obsessed with tariffs. The President might as well be called Donald 'Tariff' Trump. During his first term in the White House, DT was obsessed with tariffs. Taxing imports into America is supposedly protecting American industry. As to whether it does, I don't know; I am not an economist. Producers of goods exporting to the USA, like China and Europe, will be paying high taxes on goods.
Canada has been slapped with tariffs on exports to the USA. Canada, under its new Prime Minister and Trudeau, responded in kind. Mark Carney was chosen by the current Canadian administration. Mark Carney was the Head of The Bank of England. He has a sound financial background. He has promised to stand up to the 'Orange Menace' south of the Canadian border. Carney has called a general election so that he has a mandate to steer Canada through Trump Tariffs.
Trump said he would impose tariffs on competitor countries. As soon as he entered the White House, that is what he did. Trump has a reputation for not just saying things but doing them. Trump must be on record for signing the most executive orders ever!
Mr. Trump has slapped a 25% tariff on UK goods. The UK car industry, including Jaguar and Land Rover, will be affected. It's hard to believe the UK even has a car industry now. Most of the cars you see around the UK are foreign. Some are made here while others are exported to the UK. The UK was known for its car industry.
Notice that the British cars being manufactured now are cars for the elite. Not that it matters because this industry is providing jobs for ordinary people.
Chancellor Rachel Reeves, who announced her 'Spring Budget' yesterday, was in conversation with Sky News' Wilfred Frost. She said the UK was not in a position to respond to Trump's tariffs. At least not yet. Ms. Reeves said she would prefer to sort things out peacefully with the Trump administration. The 25 percent tariffs on UK goods will go live on 2 April.
Trump loves to be seen in the Oval Office with his staff and in the media spotlight, signing executive orders. Always showing what he has signed to the camera. As if saying, "I am as good as my word, what I say is what I do". Trump also loves the limelight and laps up all the attention. Even the negative news about him doesn't affect him. The more dirt Kamala Harris dug up on him, the reverse happened. Instead of putting a dent in his lead over Harris or destroying his campaign, people supported him even more!
For better or worse, people saw Trump as a regular guy like them. However, Trump isn't like his voter core, he is a billionaire. And like all politicians, he knows how to manipulate voters and get them to support him.
The UK does not want a trade war with the US. Is it because the UK government is afraid of the Trump administration? Is it a fact that the UK government knows that to keep in with the unpredictability of a madman, they must tread carefully? Is it because the UK genuinely wants to seek a peaceful solution with the US?
Time will tell what effect this 25 % tariff executive order by Trump will have on UK exports to the US. Whether the UK will respond by imposing tariffs on US goods or seek that much-talked-about, never-happened yet, elusive trade deal with America, remains to be seen.
Trump may have taken the world by storm, however, countries have to adapt. Allies of the US must either go along with Trump or risk his wrath if they do not. Enemy nations like Iran, Russia, North Korea, and China will have to adapt to. The world Trump has created is unpredictable and unknowable. Whether that's on foreign relations, and most certainly, on trade.
