Liz Kendall: Welfare Reforms Ahead.

Benefit Cuts to a Broken System.

Department of Work and Pensions..

Labour in their manifesto said they would be reforming a failing welfare system. People on benefits are not just out of work, but also those in work. People always wrongly assume the benefits system exists for those not in employment. While that is true, many working people also access the benefits system.

Labour was duly elected last July, and Sir Keir took over the reins of government. Labour had a thumping majority and the Tories were vastly cut back. Reform was a thorn in the side of the Tories and gained 5 MPs. The Lib Dems did well, and other parties took what comfort they could.

The Conservatives are well known for cutting or altering the benefits system. Little did anyone know that Labour under Work and Pensions Secretary Liz Kendall was slashing welfare. Sir Keir Starmer, like Trump, has spoken about bloated government and the need to cut it back. Liz Kendall is going faster and harder (than any Tory ever did) to reform what Labour thinks is a failing welfare system. Questioned by Sky News about the changes being brought to welfare, she was unrepentant. Ms. Kendall is not bothered by what her fellow Labour MPs think. She told Sky News bluntly, "I am going to be a Labour Work and Pensions Secretary who fixes a broken system, where people have been written off and denied chances and choices".

The Work and Pensions Secretary said, "I am cross, because I've seen people in my constituency written off. It is not a life they hoped for".

Labour will remove PIP (Personal Independence Payment) from those with not-so-severe physical or mental ailments. Only those with very severe mental or physical conditions will not face Liz's axe. No doubt, as I write this, people already struggling to pay the bills and put food on the table will be in fear. Labour wants to save 5 billion by cutting the welfare bill.

Labour has already taken the axe to the overseas aid budget. Another Trumpian policy, because Labour has used the money saved on that to increase defence spending. Trump wants NATO members to put more into the pot if they want America to still be there for them. Labour is also cracking down on illegal migration and immigration. Some pundits have accused Labour of trying to outperform Reform. The Tories spoke much about being tough on immigrants arriving here. One remembers Sunak on about "Stopping the Boats". However, under their watch, migration and immigration soured. The woman who now leads the right-wing Conservative Party, Kemi Badenoch, was pro-immigration and migration. It's amazing how politicians can change direction when they see which way the political wind is blowing.

Labour Prime Minister Clement Attlee founded the welfare state. A safety net for those out of work or looking for work. What would Clement Attlee now think of Labour cutting the very thing his government set up after the war? The intellectual founder of the welfare state was William Beveridge. Clement Attlee implemented the idea, and his Chancellor, Hugh Dalton, funded it.

Universal Credit, founded by Tory Work and Pensions Secretary Iain Duncan Smith, created this all-in-one benefit. On paper, it seemed a good idea. However, it has become a bloated, good nothing, good for no one, oppressive system. Will Liz Kendall's plans to reform welfare ultimately work? To truly help those who can work and protect those who cannot? Sir Keir outlined at PMQs that those who could not work would be protected.

Those on benefits, whether in employment or not, who use the welfare system, must realize a storm is coming. This will probably be the biggest shake-up to welfare in generations.
