Mette Frederiksen: Greenland isn't Yours!

Danish PM Pushes Back Against Trump.

Mette Frederiksen: Danish Prime Minister.

Trump has always been obsessed with Greenland. During his first term, he mentioned it then. Now, in his second coming, President Trump stated the US needs Greenland for defence. Mentioning Russian and Chinese ships that pass that way. Of course, one has to take into account the minerals that lie under the snow that covers Greenland. So is Trump's interest merely for defence or business or both? The irony of it is that Greenland already has a US military base there with the permission of Denmark.

Since Trump took action against Venezuela and captured Maduro, the spectre of Greenland has come up again. Trump has stated that he has designs on Greenland. It seems the capture of Maduro has emboldened Trump to think of taking Greenland again. Mette Frederiksen, the Danish Prime Minister, has pushed back as she did before against this. She said any invasion of Greenland would "End everything, including NATO". Sir Keir Starmer, while saying he would shed no tears over the departure of Maduro, said he would stand four square with Mette Frederiksen. Despite all of this, Trump is refusing to back down. Mr. Trump said the US needed Greenland "right now". His excuse or reason was that the US, Europe, and the free world needed Greenland for defence. Perhaps aware of Ms. Frederiksen's words, Trump said, "I am very loyal to Europe". Since when, though, has Trump ever listened to anyone? Trump has also stated he is not in any hurry to take Greenland. But isn't that in contradiction of what Trump recently said, "We need Greenland right now"?

Trump says he wants to run Venezuela for the oil that would benefit the US (of course!), and the revenue would help its people. And by God, those wretched people need help. Under Maduro, the oil industry has taken a hit, and Venezuela does not export as many barrels as it did. This has led to Venezuela being a basket case. With most of the people barely scraping by. Venezuela is currently run by Maduro's deputy, who has been sworn in as a so-called interim President. Delcy Rodriguez, a Maduro loyalist, has condemned the attack on her country and condemned the abduction of Nicolas Maduro and his wife. She says, if it can be believed, she is willing to work with the Trump administration. If not, Trump said he would allegedly attack Venzuela again.

Trump now seems to be on a crusade in the Caribbean and South America against left-leaning or far-left governments. Colombia, next door to Venezuela, is in his sights, as is the US's old foe, Cuba. Even Mexico, which is not in the Caribbean or South America or far left, is under threat because he thinks Mexico's government under Claudia Sheinbaum cannot handle the drug cartels. Trump may not do anything against these countries. Conversely, Trump has a reputation for doing what he states and that, for many, is where the danger lies.

Some say the world as in the novel "1984" is being divided into three areas of control. First, you have the Western Hemisphere, where Trump is asserting the US's dominance, mainly in its backyard, the Americas, including Canada. Russia in Ukraine and other areas. China, with Taiwan and other places in its vicinity.

So, are we getting a world divided into spheres of influence? Where Trump controls his area, Xi controls his area of the world, and Putin controls his. If so, are we not backtracking to a time when empires existed?

After the end of World War II, the age of empires like Britain's was supposed to have been stuck in the bin of history. However, in 2026, colonialism has raised its head again in the examples I have given.
