When Did We Forget How To Be Human?

A Realization For Leaders While Looking Through My Top Performing Articles

By Dr. Cody Dakota Wooten, DFM, DHM, DAS (hc)Published about a year ago 3 min read

When you Write Articles Every Day, you begin to see trends in your work.

I have a wide variety of topics I Write about, though they all Relate to Leadership in one way or another.

Legendary Leadership.

Regenerative Legacy Design.

The Cycles of Leadership.

Sageship.

Future Sightedness as a Leader.

I also have more "Trendy" Topics I write about in the world, such as AI and the Failed Return-To-Office "Mandates".

Then sometimes I also Write about my own Journey and Life.

Well, I decided to look into some of my Trends as of Late on One of the Platforms I Publish to, Typeshare.

Specifically, what Articles were Connecting with People?

Let's see if You can Connect the Dots Here.

These are the Titles of most of my Top Performing Pieces (at least on Typeshare):

  • The Secret To Winning The "Game" - Where Most People Miss The Mark That Prevents Their Long-Term Success
  • Why You Must Start - The Reality Of The Moment
  • Overcoming The Siren's Call - The Tempting Lure Of Failure
  • The Countdown - Facing The Pressure
  • Be Wary Of The Identities You Choose - The Crash Of The Wrong Identities
  • Unknown Struggle - When You Have No Reasons
  • What To Do When Things Are Not Fair - The Way Forward Facing The Reality Of Life
  • A Goal's Purpose - Where Most People Go Wrong And Why It Holds Them Back
  • Sift Through The Struggle - Before It Consumes You
  • Finding Joy In The Small Things - The Micro In The Macro
  • For Those Who Feel Without Hope - A Message For You

What did you See?

Do you see anything about Leadership?

I Don't (Even if I Discuss Aspects of Leadership in All of these Articles).

Is it Business Models?

Nope.

Productivity?

Profits?

Planning?

Cooperation?

None of these.

So, what is the Connecting Thread through all of these?

Let's look at some Key Words.

Success.

Start(ing).

The Moment.

Failure.

Pressure.

Identity.

Struggle.

Fair(ness).

Reality.

Goals.

Joy.

Hope.

What do "All" of these have in Common?

They are "All" Basic Aspects of Being Human.

Things We Seek as Humans.

Things that Challenge Us as Humans.

Things We Must Face As Humans.

I had a Realization as I was Reading Through Each Article Title.

When Did We Forget How To Be Human?

That is what is Underlying All of these.

People Who Are "Seeking" How To Be Human.

  • How do we Find Success in Life as Humans?
  • How do we Start a New Endeavor as Humans?
  • How do we Face The Moment as Humans?
  • How do we Not Get Tempted into Failure as Humans?
  • How do we Face Pressure as Humans?
  • How do we Understand our Identity as Humans?
  • How do we Move Forward when Life is Not Fair as Humans?
  • How do we Accept Our Reality as Humans?
  • How do we Look at Goals as Humans?
  • How do we Feel Joy as Humans?
  • How do we Keep Going when we Do Not Feel Hope as Humans?

Each and Every Single one of these Articles has to do with Being Human.

I also Know one of the "Most" Common Things I say to My Clients is, "Welcome. You're Human. We've been Waiting for You."

There are "Many High-Level Concepts that Exist in Life.

It can be "Incredibly" Important to Discuss Those, Build on Those, and Grow Those Ideas.

But...

There is One Thing in Life that we "Must" Always come back to.

"Especially" as Leaders.

Humanity.

We are Humans, First and Foremost.

Everyone "Struggles" with that though.

You Struggle with it.

Those You Lead also Struggle with it.

If our Goals and Tactics and Operations Fail to Understand This "First", then We Will Fail as Humans.

Which brings me to a Brilliant Quote...

"All Flourishing Is Mutual." - Robin Wall Kimmerer

To "Truly" Succeed, we must Understand This.

We "Only" Flourish as Humans if "We" are All Flourishing.

The Reason We Must Continually Return to Disucssing How to be Human?

We've Forgotten How To Be Human.

As a Society.

Until "We" Understand How to be Human, and Help those we Lead Understand, We Will Fail as Leaders.

One of the Greatest Leadership Lessons to Exist...

Discover How To Be Human.

This boomerangs back to child development for me. Maybe I should have been a therapist 😂 I know, it's cliche to blame your parents for everything isn't it? But we cannot discount the impact of things that occur when we are fresh clay, or even earlier, when the very core of our selves is being created. (You are what your grandmother ate.) Here's one example, which I will pinch from Michel Odent. Oxtytocin is love, in chemical form. We are supposed to be flooded with it at the point of birth (both mum and baby). But because women are given the synthetic form of it, it suppresses the natural one. Entire generations of human beings have been born, literally, without love. *And hardly anyone is talking about this.* How it will affect us wholesale, as a species, as a society. The Continuum Concept is an insightful read which offers a second example: so many of the things we do, the things we enjoy and crave.... are an attempt to fill a cup that wasn't properly filled in infancy. (Quite a significant one being Risk.)

  • We "Only" Flourish as Humans if "We" are All Flourishing. Oooo, that was so deep!

Great points, Cody. At this moment, however, it seems our society is sharply turning into the fascism.
