Walking

Steps in Time

First steps, jubilance, second steps laughter, third steps a bit further

Further from me. In the first days first steps were celebrations, smiles,

Camera moments worthy to hold onto. Steps got harder though, you moved

Toward a place I can't see, a place within that has broken you, a step into

Darkness, a hole? A place my love can not fix for you, you halt, I retreat

How can I help you walk toward me, toward light, hope, belief in yourself?

How do I let go of pushing, dragging, begging, crying, sobbing, dreaming,

Calling, texting, waiting, suffering, swearing, constant thinking, staring?

First steps can happen again. See, you don't need to be perfect, astray or

Hide from me or yourself; we can try first steps all over again together.

I can't pull you up all alone, your shit's heavy babe, but I can sit by in the

Darkness, in the light beside you, with hope, believing in you when you

Feel another day is too damn long. I won't ever stop walking carefully

Near you, listening for just a hint of that sparkle you had back when steps

Were filled with jubilance, smiles, and laughter. The steps you are climbing

Up now are gonna hurt, try to break you, cause anger, resentment, struggle

Tears, and an anxiety that nags at you like a chipped nail you gotta chew off

Because there is no other solution. It's work. These steps, this walk.

But, you gotta take it. I can't walk your path for you, just near you. Sighs.

Signs, meaning, screaming, praying, moon waning, rising, sun shining, but

You're lying in a bed, one where time is walking passed you; please child

Rise up as I do for you, every morning, every chance you give me to meet

You on your journey. One step, I am pleading you to take toward love.

A moving description of the heartbreak, frustration and hope of carrying for someone who can’t breakthrough their own prison. Hugs.

Try as we might, we can only support, for the other soul must feel it within themselves to want to rise, it is a personal journey...you do the right thing, be by their side. Prayers, hugs and blessings. Hope things are getting better

Why do I want to cry now? 💔 We got to keep walking for them and ourselves, and hopefully they'll always be by our side with the rise of the morning. I'm sure most the meaning of this went over my fat empty head, but stay strong Rock/Andrea... Rocdrea! 💛

Goodness this made me cry. I have felt and still feel all of this. It's the most beautiful thing and the greatest pain at the same time. Hugs to you, sweet friend :)

  • This piece is raw, tender, and profoundly human. The rhythm mirrors the emotional weight of each step—both literal and metaphorical. Your honesty and unwavering presence shine through every line. It’s a quiet yet powerful call to keep believing in love, even when it's walking through darkness.

Beautifully written! The imagery in your words makes the simple act of walking feel so peaceful and profound. It really captures a sense of calm reflection—I truly enjoyed reading this.

  • You just threw a rock into my puddle stirring a ripple...whew, great stuff, my friend

This seems so personal and relatable!

  • Your poem is very moving.. and poignant. I recognize the changes in the role of a parent as their child comes into their own...you have delicately addressed the parental journey. lovely.

Oh my, Andrea, this was so damn good. I've heard friends and family dealing with post-partum depression or PTSD, and I wish I could have said these things to them. Just beautiful.

  • Love this poem, and a lot of things to consider here

I like the contrast here between early and later days ROCK, and especially in "when steps Were filled with jubilance, smiles, and laughter. The steps you are climbing Up now are gonna hurt". You are able to clearly show the struggle and anguish of the parent, and how hard it can be:/

  • We can only guide a horse to the water. We cannot force it to drink. Loved your poem!
