All you wanted was for your son to be

Wrapped safely in your arms

By Marco Bianchetti on Unsplash

To protect him from the one

Doing the most harm

For you had endured it yourself

You knew what he could do

He would stop at nothing

To manipulate him, too

To twist your love into something else

Because he himself has no feeling

By Tobias Rademacher on Unsplash

He would bestow upon you gifts

To distract you from healing

He would use keywords

To make you feel special

Grind you to dust

With his mortar and pestle

By Katherine Hanlon on Unsplash

Only to revive you again

And be your saving grace

So you'd run back to him

Craving his embrace

Until the thorns dug in so much

That it wasn't just you

An innocent little boy

Could see it, too

So you decided the time had come

And bear it you could no longer

You would do what you could

To rise up and reconquer

You fought a war that shed

Blood that could not be seen

By Alexandre Boucey on Unsplash

Magnificent in battle

A soldier with wings

Though your strength was mighty

And you smiled through the pain

By Ryoji Iwata on Unsplash

There weren't enough umbrellas

To shield you from his rain

Something that couldn't be covered with gauze

For the damage was now done

You fought until your end

And he took from you your son

He took away your chance

By Edward Howell on Unsplash

To see him grow

To watch him become

The best man you would ever know

He took from an innocent little boy

His beautiful, loving mom

But I promise you this, baby girl

As long as I am here, you will live on
