Half a century ago

The Hat was a golden haystack

Neatly woven, forming a domed crown,

encircled by a circular brim…

Perfect!

‘One Size Fits All’!

Except

despite its best effort

it perched precariously atop Her head.

Useless!

Her nose sizzled

Scorched scarlet.

*

A decade down the track

the ‘Head Gasket’ stretched around Her crown

Thwarting the Sun targeting tender cheeks.

Perfect!

Except

when it’s wet-suit fabric floated lazily

across the lake’s liquid silver surface.

*

Last Mothers’ Day

The Cap climbed out of the bag

Fabulous fire engine red!

The gift caught her by surprise.

Perfect!

This Cap clung snugly to her head

Dutifully warded off the Sun’s sneaky UV rays

As she cantered around the parkrun course…

Of course!

What a charming and vividly nostalgic piece! I love how each stanza captures a distinct era of life through the lens of the evolving relationship with something as simple—and symbolically rich—as a hat. The imagery is so alive (especially “the lake’s liquid silver surface” and “Her nose sizzled / Scorched scarlet”), and the gentle humor adds such warmth. There’s something universally relatable in the lifelong search for just the right fit—not only for hats, but perhaps for stages of identity and self-expression. A beautiful blend of memory, metaphor, and affection.

What a sensational saga of head-wear! Loved it, Angie! ‘One Size Fits All’! is never a good sign... I have quite a big noggin so hats are usually forgone.
