With a scream and a cry,

The nurse handed him to her.

So new and fresh.

His cry broke her heart.

At two years old,

He fell and scraped his knee,

Still so much to learn,

His cry broke her heart.

Seven, now.

School children showing him unkindness.

He gritted his teeth,

Determination was the name of the game.

At night,

His cry broke her heart.

With a few more years under his belt,

Feeling big and strong,

Double digits. Ten.

A first fight, but nothing too serious.

Later, at home,

His cry broke her heart.

Thirteen, puberty.

Now she was really in uncharted territory.

She watched from afar,

As he pushed her away. Like most boys do.

His silent cry, broke her heart.

Now, a big man. Fifteen.

High school. She watched his choices.

Some good, some questionable.

His lack of cry, broke her heart.

Eighteen! Where had her baby boy gone?

An adult all around. Graduated and off on his own.

She hoped and prayed she taught him well.

He left, and he broke her heart.

She learned to live anew,

This life without him here.

His calls were nice.

He seemed happy.

He broke her heart.

Young adulthood came,

He’d been doing well on his own for some time now.

His life was his own…

Then it was gone.

She heard his cry once more,

It broke her heart.

She realized it wasn’t his,

But her own.

Her boy was gone,

In an instant and flash.

How? So fast?

For the last time,

In the very worst of ways,

He broke his mama’s heart.
